Maxi5566
Hi, Someone I know knows a guy that is selling a Thompson M1A1 in very good condition. He says there is an anchor stamped next to the serial number. Anyone know anything about these Thompsons? Are they even genuine Navy M1A1 or were stamped later to increase the guns value? Thanks
Chopper28
I don.t know about any Anchor stamps but my brother was a gunners mate 1st class on a destroyer during the late 60's and he definately had M! TSMG's on board. He said every once in a while when at sea they would throw something like a barrel or a pallet in the water for target practice. Shoot the TSMG's, M1 rifles, .45 pistol, .50 cal, what ever they had. Just sweep the brass over board, Then clean the weapons and store away. FWIW. MG08
There were at least a few thompsons in navy armories in the early 80s. I seem to remember they were M1A1s. We had very little 45 ammo, so the thompsons were never taken out. As far as the Anchor- it could be a CIA / bolivian navy contract gun sold by sadam Hussein to the North Koreans for Hitler to study. No real way to know unless there is a paper trail. Post WWII the guns were given away to so many different countries. Generally speaking, the US Navy was not marking anchors on guns to ID them as Nay property. I saw a lot of Navy / Marine weapons and none with even Property of USN on them.
