Short Barrel Conversion

I found a really neat gun shop in my town that is full of interesting stuff including two full auto Thompson m1s. After looking at them I am now on the quest to have my m1 fitted with a short barrel. The owner of the shop walked me through all the steps and told me that it could take up to 6 months to get the ATF stamp back (and for me to get my gun).

I have a few questions for you guys:

1) I think the gun would be more pleasurable to shoot and handle with a short barrel.. For those of you with the short barrel guns can you tell me if that is the case?

2) what wait times are you experiencing with the return of the ATF - really 6 months?

3) the shop owner says they have changed barrels on several Thompsons and mentioned that some were a screw in barrel and others were pressed. My m1 was built in 2008- any idea if a/o s of that vintage are pressed or screwed?

I took it to the range again today and it performed fine...I just need that short barrel now!

Thanks

Dan

Dan, I recently had my 1927a1 short barreled and it was most certainly more enjoyable with the shorter barrel. Indeed the wait time is 6 months from the time my form 1 went pending to the date on the approved stamp it was 6 months to the day. I would also recommend the ez pull spring kit as it makes the gun much smoother and easier to charge the weapon. And all of the Thompson models use a screw on barrel I believe he may have been talking about the compensators on the 1927a1's being threaded or press fit to the barrel not the barrel to receiver.

I had my semi auto Thompson M1 and Thompson 1927A guns SBR'd a couple of years ago and couldn't be happier with them. The difference in handling really surprised me, and both guns make a lot more sense with the properly shortened barrels. As for wait time on the tax stamp these days, I just received stamps for a suppressor and my full auto Thompson 1928A1. Both took just over 8 months to clear, unfortunately. Two years ago when I had my semi-auto Thompsons SBR'd, the wait time was 6 months, almost to the day.

Personally I still wouldn't hesitate to SBR the Thompson, despite the longer wait time. For me, the barrel change makes both guns a lot more fun to handle and use, and it just makes them look right.

As WW2 said in the above post, it's worth installing the EX Pull spring kit. I had one installed in each Thompson when they were SBR'd. They are both a whole lot easier and more fun to use at the range now with the new spring kits installed.

SBR'd my M1A1 several years ago; it took about 5 months (it was right after the ATF shifted to Martinsburg). I installed the EZ pulls, put red Lok-tite on the rear sight screws, and made the GI mag catch mod. I did the SBR change only to make the gun look "right", as it was meant to be; I did it myself in my shop, as the barrel only screws in.

Do it. The end result more than compensates for the red tape. These guns just don't look or feel right with those squirrel gun barrels. And you will turn heads at the range ;)

Some people list the wait time from when it goes pending, others list it from when they mail the form.

("goes pending" translation: we have it; now it goes into a box with the others. EIGHT months later, when we finally get to it -we will process it in a few days).

Don't blame the examiners. They are swamped, and getting no help from the people who spend our taxes.

Only a year ago, form 4's (at least from Minnesota) were being processed in 4 months from going pending.

Now, the few I heard about recently were 8 to 9 months.

  • 4 weeks later...

Who sells the EZ Pull Springs?

I own two Semi Autos, 1927A1 built in the 1970's and an M1 Model built in the late 1990's, I might want to do the springs as a project this Winter.

Last Winter's project was installing a 14.5 Green Mountain Barrel(I live in NJ) with quick disconnect system on the 1927A1.

If I move to PA and file the papers, a Short Barrel will be no problem to install.

Cheaper here: http://mysite.verizon.net/colt1927/thompson/ez.htm

It's where I bought mine.

Rob

He doesn't sell anymore, I had sent a MO to him and he sent it back saying he doesn't sell these anymore- This was probably 8-10 months ago. I think this is an old listing now.

Did the same to Tommygunner , he said he never got my check so I canceled the check ( charged 35 bucks ). About 6 months later he called said he found the check behind his desk.

Never got one, gave up.

Thanks for clearing that up, Sandy...I've been sending folks there left-and-right, and never once did I realize he quit selling them.

Looks like there might be viable a market for anyone who wants to reproduce those EZ Pulls. ;)
