Recoil spring

Recommended Posts

I disassembled my OOW1918A3 SLR for cleaning for the first time and I tried for over 3 hours to get the recoil spring and rod installed after cut fingers and cussing I still could not get it installed ! Any body have any hints to get this spring installed? I have seen OOW video and thats why my fingers are cut up. I can't hold the spring compressed long enough to install it. Is there a short cut I missed? Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff I know what you mean lol. What I do with my OOW 1918A3 is pretty much as you see in the video, perhaps try wearing a glove. Not sure if this will help, maybe give you more grip and prevent cuts. Also check YouTube for disassemble/reassembly videos. Regards. Rob

Go to your local truck parts store ( freightliner , peterbuilt , etc. ) and buy a foot of each of 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch plastic air line . You then cut those down to just a little bit shorter than the distance between the front of your reciever and the back of the gas tube . Take a razor blade knife and slice those two lines like gutting a fish . You want the slots wide enough for the recoil spring to just pass through when you apply force . Now , lay the 1/2 inch with the slot down into the 5/8 inch with it's slot up and set those in the gap . Feed the spring through the reciever , the tubes , and into the gas tube . The plastic tubes bridge the gap and keep the spring from snaking until you get the guide locked down . Take a dental pick or screwdriver and rotate the 5/8 slot down to the 1/2 s slot , then peal them both out over the spring and out of the gun .

Easy - peasy , as they say .

Also , enjoy a couple of pop-cicles for a job well done .

Then , clean the pop-cicle sticks and glue them together , one on top of the other . Then drill a little hole through them and install a peg . I used the extractor retaining pin out of a greasegun .

Pull your BAR charging handle to the rear with your left hand . Pinch it in place with your right thumb against the stock wrist . Use your left hand to grab the peg and place the sticks into the charging handle slot , tipping the reciever a bit to make them stay . Grab the charging handle with your left hand again and ease it forward till it pinches the sticks to the front of the slot .

You now have a bolt hold open device .
