What to Visit in Ireland

Recommended Posts

Dublin had a few museums but I don't remember seeing any Thompsons. The south in general and the little coastal towns along the way are beautiful. I did not care for Belfast. Overall a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. Ask them how they like their free medical care. I heard lots of complaints.

The Imperial War Museum in London has a 3 serial digit 1921A that was seized from the IRA in the 1970's currently on display. Not Ireland but maybe within your reach while you are "over there".

I was thinking about taking the ferry from Dublin to the UK. Will have plenty of time to look around.

Plan on 3 extra days for London unless you fly. We did Irish Ferries from Dublin to Holyhead, Wales (2 pluz hours). Rented a car there and drove to London. It was about a 6 - 8 hour drive with construction congestion (detour in Birmingham, etc). IWM London was cool.

What was wrong with Belfast? Looking at a day trip to there, this year.

Our tour bus drove around the city of Belfast before heading south. Saw lots of IRA grafitti and a few memorials. That was interesting. But mostly it looked like any city with getto's and dirty industrial areas. Once outside the city the country side was beautiful.

Thanks. We will just be passing through by car from Dublin on our way to Scotland.

We started in Edinburgh to Belfast then Dublin. Scotland was beautiful, highlands, museums, battlefields, Lock Ness, ect.

Some pics of Scotland

Great photos. Thanks so much. Did you take the ferrie from Scotland to Northern Ireland and if so, how was that?

Yes, we took the ferry. It was a nice and comfortable ride. There was a indoor area for seating, food, ect. I only have a few pics from the ferry.

I believe I read somewhere that there was is a 1921 in the Curragh military museum in Ireland:

https://www.discoverireland.ie/Arts-Culture-Heritage/curragh-military-museum/87867

But, I may be wrong.

This may be an interesting place to visit too:

The Royal Armouries in Leeds, (England), is more weapon orientated than the IWM in London.

The displays change there, so you may not see any 1921's, although, again I believe they do have some, it is some years since I visited that museum..

Further North, in Newcastle upon Tyne, there is a 3 digit, although chiselled off, deactivated former IRA Model of 1921, together with the rest of my TSMG collection, which grows larger by the year.

Ireland is a lovely country, it has been a few years since I have visited, I am sure you'll enjoy it.

Robert,
During some research, back in 2011, I accessed the following website, http://thompsongunireland.com/Serial%20Numbers/Serial%20Numbers.htm which had a webpage titled: Analysis of Serial Numbers.

I am unable to access it now, but I did save a copy at the time in pdf. format. I have just located that on my external hard drive and confirmed some information given above. There are, or were, a number of museums that had Thompson Model of 1921’s in Ireland and the UK.

Ireland:

  • Collins Barracks Dublin 847 & 815
  • Irish Army Barracks Museum s/n 832
  • Kilmainham Gaol Dublin s/n’s 232 & 1083
  • Wexford Museum Enniscorthy s/n 1080
  • Military College Curragh s/n 914

And in the UK, incl. Northern Ireland:

If visiting, I’d confirm they still have them on display, before making a trip, to avoid being disappointed.

There are one or two, former IRA Thompson Model of 1921's in Norway too, I believe, and it is documented in this forum there are some in New Zealand.

I want to identify places to go in Ireland and nearby, especially firearms and Thompson related sites, so I can be sure to stop in and see what's there rather than pass by without knowing what I missed.

Wow, great pictures. Keep the info coming.

Thanks,

Robert

Not Thompson related, but if in Ireland Giant's Causeway and Guinness. The causeway is out of the way, but if in Dublin Guinness was a good time.

Which reminds me, last time we were in Dublin, we visited the Jameson Whiskey Distillery, and on the tour there was the opportunity for some tasting! Unfortunately, I was driving so I had to pass, but my wife enjoyed the tasting and now enjoys a dram of Jameson's on occasions.

I was in Ireland the last couple of weeks, and I did make it to the Collins Barracks in Dublin. The only Thompson I saw there was what looked like SN 142 (see attached picture). I have a few more pictures which are similar if needed. A lot of other very interesting firearms in the museum. Thanks for all the great information,

Robert
