Cdnn Thompson Mags.

Recommended Posts

Just got some Thompson mags from CDNN. They're listed as Excellent/like new but they're far from it. Most of the ones that I received were badly pitted and had some kind of very crappy dull finish(parkerizing?) on them and it wasn't an even finish to boot. I'm not really sure where to buy mags anymore. What a Country has them listed as excellent but ARE THEY? I think the only way to make sure that I get a nice, blue, excellent mag for my gun is to go to a gun show and look at the mags before I buy them. Even if I have to spend more I think in the long run it'll be worth it. Just thought I'd give ya'll a "heads up" on this before you spend your hard earned money and get disapointed like I was. Talk to ya'll later. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/unsure.gif

I'd gotten bad reports on CDNN in general for quality. My "What a Country" mags were not excellent...1 out of 4 was, and they all cost the same. But, I got a patent date mag in the bunch, so that helped ease the pain.

Gun shows are the way to go, to dig through and get what you want; although I don't see many Tommy mags at shows anymore where I go, especially 20-rounders. I wonder if some of these jobbers would let you come in and hand-pick mags. Likely not. Regardless, sorry you got burned on that deal.

I have received over 25 mags from what a country - 4 were good dated mags with little or no finish. The rest were dogs.

I think there is no source for 20 rd mags in number - just keep tying to find at shows. A dated 20 rd mag - new condition, parked in the wrapper sold on Ebay for $163.00 last week.

would it make me a bad person if i knew of a place, on line that has or atleast at the time had what i think are nice boxs. both XX and XXX.

and did'nt want to spill the beans on it, for fear that "my" supply might dry up. although i think i have enough to fill my needs. i don't buy them to sell either.

don't hate me.

Last year at the Lakeland ,Fl. gunshow there was a supplier from Texas and he had tons of tmsg mags new in the rapper for $17.00,I mean NEW!,and rusty, but never used for $7.00.I bought alot and the rusty ones cleaned up and run perfectly...I hope this guy returns for the next show...I`ll try and find his card and post it...he said he had pallets full from up north,NY. And said Gunparts had first crack...and bought all the dated ones...so they may have those...I shot the hell out of the ones I bought and the springs worked great...allows me to...KEEPEM`SMOKIN`,out. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif

Those look nice Brian, some honest ware but still blue and not pits. That's the kind of mags that I'm looking for. 20's or 30's doesn't really matter so long as they're in nice shape. I may have to give em' a call. Thanks for the heads up. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif

Darn!! I just ordered the six pack and pouch from What a Country today. The order lady said they were "excellent" and usgi. It sounds like they are pretty poor, huh?

Well, lets hope not. She said they were the best ones they had.

I'll let you know.

http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif Just checked out their web site. I think I'll call in an order tonight, they take orders 24-7, that's cool. I think 4-30 rnd mags and 2-20 rnd mags will get me started off ok. Then I can order a few more when finances become available. Thanks. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

You bought the six with the pouch? I just did that and they were darn nice... Mine came with 4 seymours, 1 SW, 1 AO "patent off". The pic looks kinda funky as I didn't have all the grease wiped off yet... They have plenty of blue, 95+, on em, and the only bad one is the Auto Ord one... someone beat the crap out of it just below the front lip,,, I think a "little" pounding will fix it more or less right up.... I very happy with the purchase...

I recently picked up some XX from Sarco that were very good. I could hardly believe I finally got something from them that was usable right out of the box.

http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/cool.gif Even those mags look better then the ones that I got. If you can imagin a mags that's laid on the battle field for some time and gotten rusty, then it's picked up and a wire wheel is run over it to clean off most(not all) of the rust. Then it looks like they put them in a tank to phosphate or parkerize them but it's not an even finish and some rust and a bunch of pits are on the mags. That what these look like. I don't mind a few pits so long as the finish is still blue and smooth and there is no rust. If they'd have advertized these as Used/Good then I'd be ok with them but when someone says Excellent/Like new then by gosh I want something that looks like a new mag. I think they call it "truth in advertizing". http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/dry.gif

I got my shotgun news yesterday and Sarco is advertising both XX and XXX mags again.

Course, there are two different ads in their section, with two different sets of prices.. but

hey, what ya gonna do.

FWIW, they are also advertising some 1928 parts they say they just found.

Cheers,

Beware the Sarco 28 parts. I haven't seen the most recent Shotgun News, but in January, I bought stuff from their ad there. It said something about discovering a batch of 28 parts that were in "excellent to new" condition. I got a barrel, with the receiver front, grip mount, and grip. Also got a complete non-crossbolt buttstock assembly. Everthing was crappy. The barrel was sans Cutts, as advertised, but the threads were ruined. The stock was too rough to every refinish. Sent em all back, and after 6 weeks with no refund, I had to call them to get them to process my refund.

I decided to bite the bullet and get IMA's 1,000 kit, and I've been very satisfied with it.

On a positive note, I got my order in from Pool's Surpplus in AR. I ordered 2 M-3 Mag pouches a BAR sling(should work fine on the Thompson) and a 50cal ammo box to store some 45ACP ammo. Everything was very nice, in fact the 3 cell/30rnd. mag pouches looked brand spankin' new and the sling looked new except for the little brass peice on the end but it cleaned up very nicely. The ammo box looked very good too. Way to go Pool's. Soon as they get the ammo pouches back in stock I'll be placing another order for a couple more, that's for sure. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Gunshows are the best bet. See what you get ahead of time (although like someone pointed out, pickins' are slim). A few years back, while looking around a guy's table, I found a .45 UD42 mag in a box of TSMG mags. Being the honest soul that I am (and not having a UD42 nor the UD42 Greed), I told the guy what he had, to which he was very grateful.

It's been my experience that "Excellent" for Sarco means excellent for having been dredged off the bottom of the Atlantic after sitting down there since WWII. I remember when Northridge was Sherwood and selling NIW and sleeve XXX'ers for $5 or 6 each. Bought several, but a buddy convinced me to sell him 6 at my cost. Got just enough left to keep my Thompsons fed.

I did notice in my latest Shotgun News that Northridge had "new" Thompson mags for $30 each or you could get "used" ones for $20. I've got an order in at Sportsmans Guide(waiting for money to hit the credit card so I can get em.) and when I call to let them know it's alright to charge to the card I'm going to also make sure that they hand pick the mags, any junk will be sent back. My '27 is too nice a gun to just stick any ol' mag into. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/cool.gif

I got three of the XX's Monday from Sportsman's Guide. They appear to be usable with about 60% blue left but I still have to clean them up to be sure, nothing special but worth the price since I can't find them at the shows here. They'll at least take up the available space in my Fox case, if nothing else. They were marked Seymour or SWCO at 2:1.

WOW, I'm starting to think I should just break down and buy the "new" mags at $30 each from Northridge. Even if I got fewer mags at least I could be assured that they'd be new. I think I'll call Northridge and see what they've got in stock. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/cool.gif

At least Sportsmans' is standing behind their product. I e-mailed them last night, and just received a response -- which is pretty fast in comparison to most companies. They are sending me a prepaid return sticker and aplogized for the quality of the mags.

One thing can be said for Sportsman's, they will stand behind their products. A few months ago they had XX's for around $14 and I ordered 10. Most were well used with 60% or less original bluing remaining; two were actually patent date mags !! However, two were unservicable and after a phone call they promptly sent me a postage paid return sticker. I opted for replacements and when they arrived one was of the 60% variety while the one was in the wrap soaked in cosmoline. The mag appears new or nearly new and had the witness holes soldered shut. I've left it in the wrap for whatever reason, having plenty of servicable mags. I feel I got my moneys worth !!
