Arthur Fliegenheimer
Italy. Sgt. Willie B. Slaughter inspects the 'tommy' gun with which he won the DSC [Distinguished Service Cross] and fulfilled the definition of his name. He knocked out two Nazi machine gun nests; killed seven, wounded seven, and captured 13 Germans. Confidential Sig [signal] Corps Photo 1-9-44." "Appointment At Hill1205"Ernie Pyle & Captain Henry T. Waskow "Sergeant Willie B. Slaughter of Company B described the deadly game of hide-and-seek played among the rocks:One time on Hill 1205, one of the men in our company, Private Twanda. W. Nobles . . . and a German sniper were having a private shooting duel. They were crawling around in the rocks and every time one would stick his head out, the other would start shooting. They looked like a couple of lizards crawling in those rocks. To me, having a ringside seat, it was rather humorous to hear Nobles shouting, "Where is the son-of-a-bitch." NFA amnesty
Not sure about Sgt. Slaughter but Captain Waskow did not survive the war. He was loved by his men, and Robert Mitchum portrayed him in the movie..The Story of GI Joe. Our local paper publishes this account written by Ernie Pyle named "The Death of Captain Waskow" on every Memorial Day. This was the italian campaign which had huge casualties on both sides. Every time I read it, always shed a tear. https://www.bendbulletin.com/opinion/editorial-the-death-of-captain-waskow/article_5886a05a-9c34-11ea-af1f-cb71ae323ced.html Edited May 25, 2020 by NFA amnesty
