Experimental ZF4 Scope and my FG42 Model 2 or MP44

Recommended Posts

Years ago I acquired this Experimental ZF4 scope. It is the one shown in believe both Senditch's and Weavers books. Now that I have a nice FG42-2 and I'd like to mount it on the gun. But as always, there are many issues...I know reproductions are built in Europe, but they will only mount the scope with the standard mounting bands found on G/K43 sniper setups. As can be seen the front scope ocular diameter is larger than the common ZF4 scope. Has anyone ever seen a mount for this scope? Either for the FG42-2 or a MP43/44 STG45.

I will gladly pay a finders fee, etc.!

Some images are attached.

Thanks

Charlie

That will easily fit one of the single piece mounts since the front ring hinges open. Or you can remove what looks to be the external sunshade, put it in a mount, and screw it back on. No markings on the scope? Ken had mounts that would fit this, don't know if he has any left. I have another set of some type of mount here, but I'm not sure those would work and finding them is the hard part! Estes would be able to make one. How much am I getting? LOL

You clearly are not all that familiar with the ZF4 scope, thus I shall enlighten you... The general, common design is as follows:

Kindly note the different lens diameter, which is not a shade on the scope tube. It is this feature, a different diameter lens, which is the experimental aspect of this design:

As noted, circled in blue...

It is this non removable portion of the ZF4 scope that keeps it from being mounted in the standard ZF4 mount utilizing the bands. I have known Ken for many years and am familiar with his and another european manufactured reproduction FG42 scope mounts. I have only seen one documented real FG scope mount and it is in a collection is Switzerland... That design will not mount this experimental ZF4 scope either. I have discussed this scope with Claus and many other Europeans over the last 10-12 years and have had no success in acquiring a mount for the FG or MP/STG guns. A mount may well not exist. Either way, after 10 years, I have posted here and elsewhere again.

As for your efforts... you don't get squat as "Remember... Close only counts in Horse Shoes, Hand Grenades, and Nuclear War" You weren't even close in this case...LOL !

BTW I'm still eager to have your information about the Junk FG42 from the Free Collection I sold off.

Such claims are valid if they are backed up with facts, images, etc.

On the one piece mount the front ring is hinged open, you slide the rear of the scope into the rear ring first then close the front ring when aligned. On the two piece mounts, with slight spreading of the ring (since there is a large gap at the bottom) they will fit over the square portion of the tube or even possibly from the rear and over the W&E knobs toward the front, then slide them into place, put the screws back thru and done. Do I need to provide photos for you, or can you do this yourself?

The rings would generally sit just behind the larger objective anyhow.

My notes are pointing toward 1889, but I would have to confirm with "the man" who worked on it.

Here is a pic of the two piece and you can see the split bottom. https://auctions.morphyauctions.com/_n__absolutely_fabulous_incredibly_sought_after_ge-lot285273.aspx bottom left pic, click, then click expand.

I have all this stuff and get more detailed pics if you think you need it? This should at least count as a "leaner" without the pics!

The FZ4 will not fit either mount. The spacing for the two piece mount will not align on the gun... Maybe I'll have to find a faked up Lou Pacilla MP/STG to butcher mount it on! LOL! Or after 30 years sell it to Europe. They have hounded me for years for it...

BTW, your link to the subject Morphy auction doesn't work for me? The welded Free gun sold at Julia long before the Morphy transition. It was SR number J.M.C. 04254 and it went for $140K.

A little more of a review of emails records shows you are playing BS Games big time! As you well know its not FG42-1 SR# 1889 a Suhl Model 1... It was transferred along with another gun on 10/15/15. You know maybe both guns are FAKES and trash? Possibly the "Dago Carpet Bagger" was involved with both! LOL!!!! I did bring some dual mag well assemblies back from my time on the North Sea... Now how many was that? I'll have to look around when I get back east. Sure glad I kept the sterile setup! Lou really wanted those!

Wow how the years have passed...

either one pictured should work with that scope on a second model, but the two ring version would require some careful manipulation most likely. Not sure how far you would have to spread it to get it either over the front or or the knobs from the back? For sake of discussion and since it might be a one shot deal, I'm not going to try it. Just removing the screw it is already spread this far when it was made. We've never had any personal communication so I'd guess you have me confused with someone else? No problem. HTH
