36Racer
Hello! Has anyone seen this type of barrel marking? Looks to be an "M" or "W"? On a WW2 Savage Thompson that has been refinished and probably re-barreled at some point. Thank you!
GaryKeim
Magnetic Particle Inspection mark. My m1918 BAR has it and I’ve read that Winchester M1’s also have just that small M. Maybe others.
36Racer
Thank you for the info! Would you have any idea of the possible makers of such a marked barrel or time frame for the "M" markings? I've not seen that on any other Thompson's of that era. That's the only marking visible. 36Racer
It has what looks like a "D". An old "P" perhaps? No "S" visible. Thanks for your help! Any idea what year "M" marking barrels may have started?

DZelenka
The way the P is struck indicates a replacement barrel. An original barrel P is readable from the rear of the gun. The original P will also have a punch mark.
Adg105200
As mentioned, definitely a poorly struck 'P'. My guess is that there is no S marking. I do recommend reading this very informative thread: http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13868 Andrew
36Racer
Excellent info--thank you. The bottom of the "P" is faintly visible if you look hard. I had read that other thread but the "M" marking was throwing me off. Did any "original" or armory replacement barrels use the "M" mark or do you think that is an indication of a modern replacement? The entire gun has been refinished so it's tough to tell from the finishing/quality of the barrel.
GaryKeim
I think the ‘M’ is standard on military weapons. The government demanded it. But I’m no expert.
Adg105200
My original replacement Savage marked M1 barrel has a few other markings, but no 'M'. Hopefully others that have s3n or have a barrel marked with a M will chime in. Andrew
