Awban Renewal Update!

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has once again introduced legislation to renew the so-called "assault weapons" ban. S.2498 was introduced last week, and, by using a "nuclear option" referred to as Rule XIV, has gotten the bill placed on the Senate calendar.

 

As a Senate educational article on the subject puts it,

 

"Most bills are routinely referred to the committee with appropriate jurisdiction as soon as they are introduced. But if a Senator plans to introduce a bill and believes that the committee to which it would be referred will be unsympathetic, Rule XIV permits the Senator to bypass the standing committee system altogether and have the bill placed directly on the Calendar of Business, with exactly the same formal status the bill would have if it had been the subject of extensive hearings and exhaustive mark-up meetings in committee."

 

The article goes on to say that this option is considered a last resort by Senators, because it "undermines the committee system as a whole and because they do not wish to encourage a practice that can be used against their own committees."

 

So, Sen. Feinstein and her 11 co-sponsors (the usual suspects) have thrown down the gauntlet, and a true showdown is shaping up. Once again, we must contact our Senators, ESPECIALLY those who voted against the AWB renewal amendment several months ago, to stand firm in their opposition to this ill-conceived and proven ineffective idea. Because the AWB renewal has enough votes in the Senate to pass, a filibuster is likely the only way it can be stopped there.

 

The Senators who voted against the recent amendment renewing the ban need our support and encouragement to stand their ground, as it the rhetoric put forth by the anti-gun side will undoubtedly be intense and viscous.

Thanks Lionhart, Now is the time to find some pro gun reps to add a "Poison Pill" amendment to the Si-Fi Di amendment. How about an attachment mandating that NFA transfers must be completed in 30 days, or NFA owners are allowed to travel interstate without prior ATFE approval, or no government agency can destroy any article of "historical signifiance". The list could go on and on; lets make it a win win for our side.

CNN Poll Shows Growing Opposition to Extension of Clinton Ban on Certain Semiautomatic Firearms

WASHINGTON, June 4 /U.S. Newswire/ -- "A CNN internet poll ongoing for about a month shows there is growing opposition to proposals to extend the 1994 Clinton era ban on the manufacture and importation of certain semiautomatic firearms," John Michael Snyder, public affairs director of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), stated here today.

 

CNN posed the question regarding the ban via its QuickVote system on May 9. As of today, about a month later, 59 percent, or 215,424, have voted in favor of lifting the ban, and 41 percent, or 152,257, have voted in favor or extending it. Actually, noted Snyder, the ban does not have to be lifted, as it is slated to sunset, or expire, in September.

 

Snyder noted also that, "this is at least the second major indication in a month that there is not enthusiastic massive popular support for extending what euphemistically has been termed a ban on 'assault weapons.' The first came on Mother's Day, when the much-heralded Million Mom March in support of extending the ban degenerated into a thousand gang limp down Pennsylvania Avenue.

 

"There never really has been such support for the ban. When the Democratic Party in elections following the 1994 enactment of the ban lost complete control of Congress for the first time in 60 years, President Clinton (news - web sites) admitted publicly that enactment of the ban was one of the major reasons for the astounding defeat."

 

Snyder said, "it is important for politicians to keep these facts in mind as they contemplate the prospect of voting again soon in the Senate on a proposal by gun-grabbing Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California to extend the ban.

 

"It's about time that Feinstein and other anti-gun extremists wake up to the fact that, as a study released last year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites) stipulated, there is 'no evidence to prove gun control laws are effective in preventing violence.'"

Just sent e-mails to my two Senators (and will follow up with hard copies tomorrow).

 

In my opinion, Feinsteins move couldn't work better for us. The best way to beat this is to show the Dems that this is an extremely risky move to renew a useless piece of legislation, and that this WILL come around and gnaw on their asses for years to come!!!

 

I e-mailed my Democrat Sen. Dayton that he should be aware that the Republicans WOULD begin using this same technique for all their minor bills and it would be to the fault of Feinstein and her cronies. This in turn may cost a bunch of them their re-election bids......

 

Then I suggested to my Republican Sen. Coleman to spread the word that the Republicans would begin using this technique for their own gains and would widely publicize the facts as to whom started it all (lay the blame where the blame is due, as it were...)
