Weapon Light on Bayonet Lug

Recommended Posts

Way too many different set ups of lugs , muzzle devices , etc . to be practical I would guess . Also it would put the lens so close to the muzzle the blast would make short work of it .

They did make some figure 8 type mounts that fitted around the barrel and light .

Too many different set-ups of bayonet lugs on an M1 Carbine? What? Not a Carbine expert, but would not expect that. Mine has the lug a ways behind the muzzle; room for full bayonet handle between lug and muzzle. Ever seen a weapon light on a MP5; way out in front of muzzle. The lug only has to be a point of retaining it on the rifle, not necessarily located in front of it. There seems to be plenty of room between front of handguard and the muzzle for a weapon light. Barrel clamp-ons are a hoky way of mounting anything to something that recoils. Not for me.

The current roaming rioting/looting mob situation has brought this to the forefront of my thought process - home defense at night without the lethality and destructiveness of a quad-50. Short, light, easy to handle and just potent enough with a decent mag capacity. But could use a weapon light.

A 12 ga would be much more appropriate than a carbine for that sort of thing. With a 12 ga even the most inept shooter would be able to hit something in the dark, light or no light.

DUBLBZ,

I don't know anyone who makes such a mount.

Some years ago, parts dealers were selling demilled carbine bayonets. The blades were torched.

I'd suggest finding a demilled, plastic handle, bayonet, and have a mechanic mount a flashlight to it.

Just remember, if your opponent is armed, the lite will give him a nice target.

I'm sorry . Didn't register carbine forum in my mind , just thinking more modern . I agree the easiest would be a cut down bayonet with maybe a rail welded to each side for a laser / light combo . I was also thinking 30-06 / .308 / .458 Socom level of muzzle blast .

Well, yes somebody does.

FAB Defense Tactical Light/Laser Mount - 1in, AR15, M4 Bayonet Lug (on opticsplanet @ $105).

Now just need another light with a remote switch (for mounting to handguard) that has momentary capability, to avoid being too much of a target as Jim C stated correctly. Absolute darkness doesn't help detect a threat.

ATF doesn't think too highly of 12 gauges the size of an M1. Wielding a full size12g inside a house, during a gunfight, is not my cup of tea at my age.

Did find a useable M4 bayonet for a decent price. Cut off the blade, remove the screw-on grips and make a side mount picatinny rail to replace one or both of them is a possibility. Then could use a pistol light.

I have a 12 ga with an 18 inch barrel and a nine round magazine that I used for three gun matches years ago, very handy. If you are worried about a gunfight in a house, learn to use a pistol.

I was an IPSC shooter starting in the mid 60's. My eyes today aren't what they were then. Bad time to trust a pistol/eye combo.

All my stuff that sports a bayonet is a little too long to use as a house gun. But I’ve got to agree with Rosco, a handgun with a laser sight and a separate high lumen tactical light is better choice than a weapon mounted light that tells a bad guy where you are and that muzzles everyone, friend or foe, in order to identify who they are. You also are standing directly behind the light so a round fired at the light has a good chance of hitting you. Holding the light away from your body is a better tactic. A 12 ga is certainly a good close quarters weapon but you can miss with one. CAS matches are cq matches with sg targets as close as 7 yds, they get missed.

PVS-14 head mount, and an Ithaca 37 riot. The Ithaca is about an inch shorter than my carbine with the flash hider. They weigh close to the same and with low recoil buckshot, it's probably less recoil.

I have an MP5 surefire and they are junk. Too far out front and most of them are flash damaged/ melted. Looks cool though, and better now that I switched it over to LED.

I've got a snooper scope setup, but honestly for home defense I'm pretty sure a carbine is not on my list, nor are flashlights. If anyone did get in, the last thing I would do is turn on a light since I'm familiar with the layout and the LED on the TV is enough light for the pvs to do it's job while the intruder stumbles or hopefully turns on a light for me. The best bet is out the window or nearest exit to become the hunter, not the hunted. If I thought it was really ugly I might fire off a warning shot and that would likely clear the building before any altercation. Glass is cheap and no one runs toward a gunfight..... generally. (contractor tip: remember which pane already has the leaking seal)

The only time I used to use a flashlight is to follow a blood trail, but I've switched to thermal now. I followed a wounded bear into the deep woods alone at dusk by myself.....and found him very much alive.......poor decision, never doing that again without thermal.

I think a 18 1/2 inch pump 12 gage would be the way to go, however if you are comfortable with the M1/2 carbine and want to set up a flashlight system, I say go for it.

I remember reading some articles about using a M1 carbine as a home defense weapon as the round is similar to a 357 magnum regarding ballistics. You could do a lot worse than using a M1, and they do handle great.

Of course my buddy Bidden would tell you to use a shotgun and shoot it outside a window to scare off people. Would not follow that demented advice unless you want to go to Prison. He is also obsessed about AR14 rifles and wants to ban them. I totally agree with him, all AR14 rifles should be banned.

Finally finished the bayonet conversion for a weapon light mount. Removed the forward section of the blade with a friction cut-off saw, leaving about 1/10" in front of the guard below the barrel hole. If removed flush, it falls apart. Removed the grips, made a 1/8" aluminum plate, mounted using the two grip screw holes, adapter to mount a flat bottom picatinny rail to its side. Bought a high lumen crimson trace weapon light with a side mount for pic rail. Short line to a momentary switch mounted via velcro on the handguard, and viola, a quickly removeable light for an M1 or 2.

StrangeRanger,

You're right. I had not thought of that. In the situation, every little thing helps.

Jim C,

The bucket of grenades I have would just get each one rolled down the hallway toward the perp. Takes too long to attach to barrel.
