Frist MP40 questions

Recommended Posts

This is my first post on this site!

I just received my MP40 parts kit in the mail today. This is my first one and wanted some general feedback on the purchase as well as some concerns. I paid 4500 so let me down easy if I messed up lol. It was advertised as all matching and they cut 2 inches off each side of the receiver. I noticed the barrel bar was not before I bought it, but found someone with an unnumbed original one, I was told for the timeframe they were not all number at this point. In my searching i have seen both not sure what popular belief is. The finish is very good and the barrel is excellent.

concerns:

1) I am unsure if the grips, along with the screw and holder are original. I can't find any online to confirm. I saw one pic that could indicate these are repo grips?

2) the stock does not have a serial number, but on that same note ive never seen one without a number only replacements making a mismatched gun. I did find a "4" on the stock but not where the serial number usually is.

3) the rear sight flip up has a "200" on the bottom on it but the top has the correct serial number in the right place. I have a picture attached. Also on the rear sight there is a "8"? stamp on the side if anyone knows what that is, also attached in a picture.

Thanks for any advice before I ask the selling anything, and let me know if any more pictures would be useful.

Good looking kit! It cost what it cost.

Grips look original. Reproductions tend to lack the steel inserts. Steyr was not serial numbering grip panels at this time. These can be either brown or black, and it's not unusual to see a brown and black grip on the same gun. Grip screw and spacer look good. A Bakelite barrel rest is most correct for a bnz 42 MP 40. Rests are reproduced but they are soft and are not really Bakelite. Usable originals are impossible to find because Bakelite is very brittle, and most have been broken. An original gun with its original barrel rest is quite rare. The barrel should also be serial numbered to the rest of the gun, as should the grip frame, each leg of the folding stock, and the stock locking button.

If you want to be really picky about mags, those marked kur 42 were also made by Steyer and will work and fit well.

Looks really nice! Any plans for it?

Thanks! I just added the pic of the barrel and receiver serial numbers I guess I slipped through the upload. Thank for the incredible amount of info! My next step was to hunt the mags so now I know what im looking for. This is the site that made me believe the grips are repo, but I cant find any good info besides this to confirm or deny it. Do you have any info on the rear sight or the stock not being numbered? I was panning down the line to make a post sample, but the barrel is so nice I might just get a dummy receiver and display it. I would like to get one of these and blue it https://mp40modelguns.forumotion.net/t3856-dummy-mp40-receiver-from-blizge-varveklis. Still figuring it out mainly happy I got one at all atm lol.

The leaf of the rear sight is serial numbered, as is correct. The rear sight base is not numbered because it was produced as part of the receiver, which is of course numbered. Steyr produced a higher percentage of its own parts than other contractors. Most parts will have WaA623 (IIRC) or WaA815 inspector stemples.

Just an FYI, it appears your bolt has been demilled as well.

$ 4.5 K is way too much for that IMHO

Whats makes you say the bolt is demilled? It looks like the parts are about 3500, i was hoping the matching aspect would make up for the rest, not sure what you think.

The 1st pic made it appear that the bolt face had been cut at a slight diagonal .....as is common with European deacts. I guess it was an "optical illusion" .... my bad

post a photo of bolt face,,,many times buying a parts kit is a crap shoot, the seller can put any thing in box to make kit complete, just sayn

Just added it ( i dont know how to add in the follow on posts) It looks fine to me it holds a round in the bolt.

Bolt face looks great. No battering. This gun obviously saw very little use.

Unless you did not include them in the first pic of all the included parts. It appears to me that there are two short sections of the receiver tube missing. The sight on an MP40 is about in the middle of the tube as measured from the rear ring of the magwell to the front edge of the upper rear of the lower where the receiver bayonets into the receiver upper. The tube section with the sight is not long enough to join where the tube is cut at the front and neither is it long enough at the rear and has no receiver lugs. There is no receiver tube section with the bayonet lugs.
So, there are two short sections of receiver tube missing.

Also, the resting bar is a steel stamping, so is not made of bakelite as noted above. Aluminum and stamped steel resting bars were commonly used. FWIW

Aluminum resting bars were used on MP 38s and early MP 40s. Stamped steel resting bars were used late war MP 40s with Bakelite resting bars in between, as a general rule of thumb. Edited by TSMGguy

Ya unfortunately the ATF took the pieces :/.

What are your plans for this kit? Do you have a registered tube?

I dont know yet was going to display it atm, maybe post sample down the line?

Thanks for that info!
