semi not extracting well. suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I bought a AM ARMS/DELTA 7.62mm SA M-60, which as far as I can tell from internet searches is US Ordnance in the early days.

Anyway, if it not fully extracting out the fired cartridge cases and jamming. I am using Federal FMJ factory ammo.

Any ideas for a DIY fix? I am running a suppressor on it. Would that be an issue? I haven't been to the range w/o the suppresor to see if that would affect it. I would think the suppressor would add back pressure, but don't know w/o testing.

Regards,

Chris

Well a lot of issues. Port pressure from the ammo may or may not be in play along with using the suppressor. Gas operated guns are designed to operate with a specific powder that provides a port pressure peak and duration to operate the gun. the barrel gas port may be dirty / plugged . Is the gun properly lubricated ? I have never looked at a semi auto one, are there other features that will eat up recoil energy ? ( short stroke) Is the bolt clean and lubricated ? is the ejector able to move, or sticking ? there are a number of good videos on the M60 - particularly on cleaning the chamber so a round will extract smoothly.

Back pressure may or may not make the gun run better in this case - The M60 was never designed to operate with a suppressor, so the longer pressure pulse may actually be short stroking the gun - you need to test without the can .

We used AR-10 rifles at work and thought we could practice cheaply with surplus ammo - got some Aussie stuff - and had nothing but FTF and FTE. Lots of calls to Armalite, sent a few back , and then tried some USGI ball. Worked like a champ. Duty ammo from Hornady worked well too. Seems the aussie stuff was intended for their FALs, and did not make the AR-10s happy.

Hi Chris:

I have had a US Ord. SA M60 for quite some time and do shoot it suppressed, which sends a lot of gas back at you.

Check your gas ports and piston and clean the chamber and bolt. Make sure the bolt carrier is lubed with grease, also rails and top cover.

I use lake city ball or quality surplus ammo, never had any issues.

Good luck, BP

Followup. I took the suppressor off and it ran fine. This is kind of disappointing since it is much more neighborly to shoot a .308 suppressed.

I will give her a good scrubbing of the areas you mentioned and try again with the suppressor (AAC Cyclone).

Thanks for the feedback.

Chris
