As much as I love M16's- I have 3 of these bad boys- I don't think we need a separate forum for them.

Our Class III forum can be the place to post if someone feels a need to.

I feel like our Boards serve those with interest for the more classic full auto's like the Thompson, Reising, BAR, MP40', etc.

My two cents.

Thanks for all you do for this Board- it's awesome.

David,

I had bookmarked the AR-15.com website, as it was the only one I saw that was close to what I was searching for, but I didn't see a lot of full auto information (maybe I missed it). With the popularity of the M16 I would have thought there would have been something more available. I guess we'll see what others think.

Best area of the AR15.com website I saw so far was the retro area as follows:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_123/241681_0Colt_s_USGI_M16_series_variation_guide_edition_IV.html

BTW, with the advent of the gun in the early years of the Vietnam war (around 50 years ago) I consider it a classic gun at this point.

Thanks TJ. I'll check out that section of AR15.com.

I was just interested in learning more about the general history of the M16. I saw a M16A1 carbine that looked pretty nice. What would you say is the going price for one in advertised excellent condition?

depends, are you refering to the commando or a CAR variant or just a shortened M16A1. So many different versions, some might not even have the forward assit. I'm very familar with them, but my father was a tester during that time period as I would refer to him further on this.

For a Colt M16A1 Carbine in excellent condition, all original parts, I would say about $25,000 +- $2K.

Depends on how motivated the seller is.

Original Colt Commando models (11.5" barrels) are rarer and therefore bring a higher price.

Check Ruben's website- seems like he kind of sets the market on the high side but some folks feel more comfortable dealing with him due to his excellent reputation plus he's a very nice gentleman.

Yes, I've found him to be good to deal with too. Only downside for me is I'm in Florida, and the state sales tax on a $28,000 gun is $1,730 extra.

I only mention Ruben as a source to look at current values- Bummer you have to pay a premium to buy from him.

You might want to look at a M16A1 rifle- there are a lot more of them out there so they sell for a lot less.

Once you have the lower you can refigure it to just about anything you want- carbine, Commando, etc.

Plus you have the option of shooting a lot of different calibers from 22Lr., to 6.8SPC, to 300 Blackout- all in full auto.

I would suggest you stick to Colt M16's for their investment value.

He who hesitates is lost.

No guts- no glory.

Good luck

Don't overlook 9mm. The M16A1 is a dream with a 9mm SMG upper. You have to get a magazine block and a dedicated 9mm buffer which is heavier and longer than a standard carbine buffer. Mine runs like a sewing machine.

I just received an AAC .300BLK upper. I hope to play with it this weekend. Let's see, that makes 5 uppers for me!

Two 20" A1 uppers;

a Commando 11.5";

a 9mm SMG 10.5"; and

an AAC .300BLK 12.5".

I am pending on a Thunder Beast 30P-1 that will get used on the AAC upper.

Everyone needs more toys.

That's a good thought. A lot of flexibility it sounds like.

I hadn't thought about the possibility of different uppers and the versatility. Good points again.

I'm not entirely sure what you are trying to go for. The older look of the M16 or a FA AR15. If you are going just for the FA I want to throw out that you could get a post 82 RDIAS for a newer AR15 lower. LWRC has a nice lower with the infinity symbol. This way you can have a piston operated if you aren't too keen on the gas operated. Though I must add if this route is taken make sure it is the legal DIAS and not the illegal kind. I had my M16A1 out today in .300 BLK configuration. It shot quite well and is now sighted in at 100 yards.

The upper is a 12.5" AAC. It's topped with a 3.5-10 Leupold set in an AR Stoner mount.

I am currently pending on a Thunder Beast 30P-1 suppressor. Once I get the can, it will screw right on this barrel with the flash hider removed. Then we go to subsonics.

Lots of fun!

Agreed. RDIAS a good option, very flexible, but typically get's further away from the classic look. Here's an example that's configured with a piston upper...

This is just too cool! I like the option of shooting 9mm and then being able to shoot ACC 300 Blackout or 5.56. That's a heck of a nice looking rifle.
