!927 A1 custom project

Recommended Posts

post-1972-0-51907100-1547747250_thumb.jpgI've started a series of mods to my 27A1 to add a more original look and functions.

1..Change out the original barrel with a Green Mt finned 14"+ and add the compensator. Turns out Kahr presses these on so I had to make a threaded adapter to screw on and weld the compensator to bring the l length to 16".

2. Next add one of my stock adapters to the lower.

3. Make a EZ take down button so the stock removes without tools.

4. Install EZ pull springs and buffer.

5. Drill holes for 28 style selector switch and make a selector that also functions as a bolt hold open to eliminate the "third hand" when inserting a drum. It also entails making a whole new pawl that is controlled by the selctor. and modyfing other parts to accomodate the new switch.

6. Checker the stock slide latch button..

My next step will be to weld the adapter seam and screw holes then machine back to the grip area and recontour. Welding is tricky on these frames as they will warp if too much heat is applied to any one area.

I am also considering milling the frame to match the 1928 where the stock slide almost touche the frame and then adding an original 28 grip complete with locating rib.

nice. I just had dan do the mods like that for my 28, but he did the 10.5 inch blank fire barrel so I can use it for reenacting or live if I want to change barrels. the hold open selector really helps with removal of the drum! now im getting ready to do a 27 I picked up pretty much the same way. keep us posted on your progress

Thanks, I'll post as I go on. My hold open was inspired by one that i was asked to copy many years ago by tommygunner.com (Damon) . It used a wire spring to activate from a modified 28 selector. When I decided to get back into Thompson conversions, I could not copy someone and feel right about it. My new design uses a different method and a selector made from scratch. As is the pawl design. I'm just a small town gunsmith with a nice bunch of tools, and I like the challenge of working out new ideas.

I have purchased 3 new cast stock slides to see how they compare to each other as far as adapter lock up. Their all different. I will start selling custom fit adapter plates from my web site www.shop.lcgnm.com today. They have minimal front to back and side to side play.

30 LPI checkering for both Colt and GI stock latches. The checkering is at 90 degrees, not a diamond pattern.

There doesn't seem to be a concern with alignment -not exactly parallel or perpendicular to the gun, even on Colts.

Thank you for that. does the colt rocker switch have the same pattern?

I like your build. Very nice. Its the small details that make the difference between average and wow. Ive rebuilt a few things. Built a Winchester M12 into a trench gun and last year I finished converting a Mini30 into a Vietnam era M1a lookalike. Just started on a Mini300blkout into a Garand T20 [magazine fed, full auto experimental version of the Garand][ mines a semi]. When I start my sbr 1927a1 build Ill post it.

I just completed a full conversion to a customer Kahr 1927A1. It included milling the receiver to eliminate the scallops and making a new adaptor for the butt stock slide, engraving the FULL AUTO/SINGLE for the new bolt hold open conversion, modified sear and disconnector, new designed hold open pawl and selector switch.
