I want to put an original butt stock on my tm1. which would be the correct type? ive searched the net and the prices are all over the place. ive also noticed that some of the butt stocks have a flat butt plate and some are inletted for a plate that wraps over the top of the stock. ive searched for butt plates for both styles and cant find anything. would I be able to use the plate that came with my stock on an original.. if so wheres a good place to get a stock that's reasonable I could use my plate on? I don't want to buy something that wont work. id like to get something I could stain and refinish myself.. thanks for any information, peter

You will want an original used, or NOS M1 stock. The ones with the buttplate that wraps over the top are for the 1928. Most of them you will see, will have a cross-bolt.

There was a guy selling still-in-wrapper M1/M1A1 butt stocks on e-Bay not long ago for $20 or $30. I bought one and it was perfect. I also bought a butt plate on eBay from a UK seller - although sometimes people here have them and there are other US sources for the butt plates. I checked eBay quickly and couldn't find a listing for the butt stocks like I purchased but you may be able to find him if you search.

I can't find the thread here where I posted pics of the butt stock when I got it - but here's a link that I posted after staining it and adding the new butt plate.

You want the M1A1 / M1 Buttstock, no difference thru their run of manufactured except for the reinforcing cross bolt by the mounting screws. Early ones did not have the crossbolt, later ones did. You can go either way. ( I like the crossbolt on the M1, but on the 28's I don't, personal preference) The Butt plate had a trap door for storage of a cleaning kit, the plate did not bend over the comb, like the 28. You can find them on Gunbroker in piece or assembled. Prices are all over the place.

Try this guy,

The M1 stocks have been a little hard to find as of late.

Not cheap, but here is one on eBay: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F282793242889 but the clock is ticking on this one and you would still need hardware.
