Reising SMG on USSR Servise during WW2

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody! I would like to share a little information about the Reising SMG service in the Red Army during WWII.

In total from 1941 to 1945 114,216 Reising SMG were produced.

Of these, US MC received 66,500, most of the rest went to the US police and rear services.

However, according to the Lend Lease 2000 pieces got to England, and 6000 pieces to the USSR.

In the Red Army, this SMG did not take root and did not enjoy a good reputation.

The conclusion of the commission testing the SMG in 1942:

“...Reising is largely difficult to disassemble, and especially in production, since it requires precise manufacturing of parts and does not allow the use of stamping in the manufacture of individual parts. From this point of view, the SMG Reising is of no interest. ”

what are you talking about ? every thing possible on these guns are stampings, the idea was to get away from machined parts,, just sayn..

Everything is relative ... Yes, Reising was considered primordially as an easier-to-manufacture alternative to Thompson. Yes, this is the first mass American SMG where stamping of parts was widely used. But also the main part of the parts still required manual adjustment. This did not allow to be interchangeable. Also extremely low reliability for pollution and frost -30 C.
The Soviets had something to compare Reising , PPSh-41 or PPS-43 ...

The PPS-43 was by far the best of those three. Quite a firearm even by today's standards.

IMHO the PPS43 was the best of the WW2 SMGs. Reliable, accurate, controllable, durable, and amazingly good handling.

Interesting to know about 600 Reisings in Soviet use. I wold surmise that they were used in rear areas only. Does anyone else have information on Russian use of Reisings?

The USSR issued from 6.000.000 to 6.500.000 different SMG during WWII. The figure of 6000 Reising does not look big relative to this ..
According to Land Lease, the USSR also received 130,000 TSMG from the USA.
Both SMGs were not widespread, due to a shortage of the .45 ACP cartridge in the councils.
They were used mainly in the places of supply - North - Karelia - Murmansk, South - Caucasus - Kuban.
There is also information that tanks, armored personnel carriers and some aircraft were equipped with SMG (each Sherman had 2 SMG).
The TSMG were also thrown behind the enemy lines, for partisan detachments. This was logical, if the Germans captured the SMG .45 then they could not use them because they did not have ammunition as well.

Privyet !

Read Bolotins book a while back and saw mention of Soviet use of Reising SMG in WWII. Figured Russia used only in areas in rear of front lines, issued to those who should HAVE a weapon but probably would not NEED to use it !

Thanks for the photos of Red Army soldiers with Reising guns. Most likely staged well behind the front, it provides proof the Russians actually made some sort of use of the Reising.

The first picture looks like a civilian/police model Reising gun with side mounted sling swivels.

“...Reising is largely difficult to disassemble, and especially in production, since it requires precise manufacturing of parts and does not allow the use of stamping in the manufacture of individual parts. From this point of view, the SMG Reising is of no interest. ”

Testing commission was spot on about that !

Although there are some stamped parts in the reising, the main parts are machined and hand fitted. Reising does not have interchangeable parts , many require fitting by an Armorer/ Artificer .

I like Reising guns, they are good shooters if in good condition. But for a combat weapon, not so much.
