I think I know the answer of this, but I want to make sure. If a non U.S. citizen, living outside our borders, buys one of our registered Thompsons, do they have to go through the transfer process? Once the Thompson leaves the country, does it lose its registration? Can it ever return?

What made me think of this question was the post on the Colt being sold buy the PD. Since they have a foreign inquiry, I was cringing at the thought that we might lose a national treasure.

it leaves the u.s.border's no comin back........at least the way we want to see it......i wanted to buy murrays irish sword at $10,000.00..however it would end up being a post sample here.so a little on the pricey side.until parts kits for colt 1921a's hit $10,000.00

Just hide it in a bail of cocaine and it will get back in no problem.

In my experience in carrying many guns abroad, you declare them at an airport or other customs office before you leave and you can bring them back. I have been through Dulles recently---with semi autos-- no problem. I would have all the paper work handy.
The issue is getting them into the outgoing country--another story.

That may work for non NFA weapons, but trying that with a TSMG and the 1986 law would hit you smack in the face.
