Preview Of My M1a1

Recommended Posts

Mike wanted to know more about my, soon to be purchased, M1a1, so I thought I'd start a new thread and give you all a preview. The seller provided me with these pics, for a cursory examination, so they aren't the clearest. I told him to hold the gun for me and I'm sending a check next week. I put together a little information about the piece. I found it before it hit the market, by placing an ad in "Strumgewehr" Sten guy helped me in my search, so thanks, Sten!

I guess it might puzzle some why we continue to post pictures of new arrivals. Well, its kind of like this. All babies are bald, ugly, and look alike, but parents keep taking pictures of them and showing those off. Just call me Papa! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

Sqt,

That gun looks great!

I would love to own an M1 (M1A1?) in that codition.

We love Thompson "baby" pictures here! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif After all, there are many Thompson "fathers-to-be" here on the board! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Speaking of fathers....

HAPPY FATHERS DAY EVERYONE!

Have you called "the old man" today?

Sgt,

That is a nice looking authentic M1 (nee M1A1).

Re the shiny finish. When I got a 28 parts kit from IMA, the wood was shiny looking. Per the information provided on this Forum by others, the shine, in the case of the 28 wood, and perhaps for your M1 also, was due to the linseed oil migrating to the surface and hardening with age. Not varnish as I had thought. A light wiping with lacquer thinner followed by a light re-oiling brought the 28 wood back to original appearance.

In any case, nice gun and happy shooting!

Tom S.

Kyle--

You win the prize! If you have any other information about the purchase, I would be most appreciative. The NFA world is small indeed.

It's a gun I started talking to him about in April. I wanted to wait until someone more knowledgable could look at it and verify all of the inspector markings before I committed to buy it. I was waiting for the gun to come out of Florida to the dealer in Georgia. Kept waiting and waiting. Then he said it was sold. My loss and your gain. From everything I know, its a righteous gun. Hope you enjoy it.

good score. My M1a1 is in that range also...5226xx. Looks like fresh parkerized finish from what i can tell on those pictures...but did well to preserve markings

I am in TN also maybe we can doa side-by-side comparison when you get it

Mine is amnesty registered WW2 bringback...it has no serial number on the lower and the exact same markings (minus the A1 crossed out)

Man that sure does look nice. Don't worry, wood is the easy thing to replace. If you find out that gun is from Ky. let me know, it may be from Eastern Kentuck. I was looking at one from a PD there and now the sheriff isn't there and no one knows anything. Damned elections screwed me on my Colt guns and that M1. Oh, the initials are FJA not AJF. It's Frank J. Atwood.

Mike-

Thanks for that correction. My brain was on leave at the time.

USMC--

I let you know when I get it. It still will require a transfer to TN and then to me, so I've got a bit of a wait.

Great M1A1 Sgt!!

While i will never be able to have children (no license for tompsons in Canada, had to have been born at the time of the ice age for that)I'm always happy and thrilled for all who are acquiring a real tommy.

I'll go hug my replicas as it's all i can do(LAUGH http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/mad.gif ARTHUR LAUGH)! ,but i get extra happy when any of you share photos or videos of your children to be.

Best regards, http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Good point, Phil. Its good to know that this particular model had the safer, earlier bolt. In shopping around for the military Thompson, I found Frank's book so full of this kind of information, that I wouldn't have known otherwise.

Thanks, guys, for the compliments!! Mario, my Mom was a strong little lady, who embraced every bit of the American dream-- well, maybe everything except spending thousands for a hunk of metal. Go figure?! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif LOL

Nice Ralph. Here's an idea. I'm not too far from the dealer. If'n you wants, I could swing by there with the JB Weld, Dremel tool and permanent marker and fix that unsightly "A1" strike out on the side of the receiver. I could make the lower match the receiver too. Just say when. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Waffen--

You have a spackle fetish, that's all there is to it! Hey, I had a thought. If you could make my SoftAir Thompson look like a real one, I'll bet we could sell it on Ebay for $700. All it would take is a little distress on that plastic wood and fill the letters in with white.

I think we've got way too much time on our hands. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

QUOTE
Meet my extended family, Monique & Bowser.  They spend most of their time just sitting in the living room, where they occasionally entertain our local Jehovah Witnesses.

Sgt, that was hilarious! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

Thanks, Norm. After five years of service, I just stepped down from being Chair of our University's Art Dept. As part of my going-away party, my secretary wanted to use some of the photos from my webpage. She was the only one at the college who knew the URL and I didn't want it spread around campus. Unfortunately, she let it slip out to the the university big mouth, and now it's become a conversation piece in the Dean's office. My cover is blown, now everyone thinks I'm nuts. I blame all you guys for tainting my respectable image. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/ph34r.gif http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif Hey, I wouldn't change a thing; I never wanted to be a suit anyway! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Sgt,

Anyone can demand respect, BUT those of us with Tommy Guns usually get it very quickly! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif
