Sgt Posted June 20, 2004 Report Share Posted June 20, 2004 Mike wanted to know more about my, soon to be purchased, M1a1, so I thought I'd start a new thread and give you all a preview. The seller provided me with these pics, for a cursory examination, so they aren't the clearest. I told him to hold the gun for me and I'm sending a check next week. I put together a little information about the piece. I found it before it hit the market, by placing an ad in "Strumgewehr" Sten guy helped me in my search, so thanks, Sten! I guess it might puzzle some why we continue to post pictures of new arrivals. Well, its kind of like this. All babies are bald, ugly, and look alike, but parents keep taking pictures of them and showing those off. SecondAmend Posted June 20, 2004 Report Share Posted June 20, 2004 Sgt, That is a nice looking authentic M1 (nee M1A1). Re the shiny finish. When I got a 28 parts kit from IMA, the wood was shiny looking. Per the information provided on this Forum by others, the shine, in the case of the 28 wood, and perhaps for your M1 also, was due to the linseed oil migrating to the surface and hardening with age. Not varnish as I had thought. A light wiping with lacquer thinner followed by a light re-oiling brought the 28 wood back to original appearance. In any case, nice gun and happy shooting! Tom S. I wanted to wait until someone more knowledgable could look at it and verify all of the inspector markings before I committed to buy it. I was waiting for the gun to come out of Florida to the dealer in Georgia. Kept waiting and waiting. Then he said it was sold. My loss and your gain. From everything I know, its a righteous gun. Looks like fresh parkerized finish from what i can tell on those pictures...but did well to preserve markings I am in TN also maybe we can doa side-by-side comparison when you get it Mine is amnesty registered WW2 bringback...it has no serial number on the lower and the exact same markings (minus the A1 crossed out) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If you find out that gun is from Ky. let me know, it may be from Eastern Kentuck. I was looking at one from a PD there and now the sheriff isn't there and no one knows anything. In shopping around for the military Thompson, I found Frank's book so full of this kind of information, that I wouldn't have known otherwise. Thanks, guys, for the compliments!! If'n you wants, I could swing by there with the JB Weld, Dremel tool and permanent marker and fix that unsightly "A1" strike out on the side of the receiver. I could make the lower match the receiver too. As part of my going-away party, my secretary wanted to use some of the photos from my webpage. She was the only one at the college who knew the URL and I didn't want it spread around campus. Unfortunately, she let it slip out to the the university big mouth, and now it's become a conversation piece in the Dean's office. My cover is blown, now everyone thinks I'm nuts.
