M3 reweld or rewat

Recommended Posts

My M3 paperwork shows Guide Lamp Corp/ N E Smith, Jr./ Mentor, OH USA. I assume it's either a reweld or rewat. Either way the gun looks and runs great. I was wondering about its status: C&R or not? As I understand it a reweld is not C&R, but a rewat is. Is this correct? Any way to tell what my gun is? Thanks for any help.

If it is listed under the "manufacturer/importer" as noted above, it is a remanufactured gun. The maker is Neil Smith who is still active in the NFA world.

A C+R example would list the factory maker, or some synonym or other identifier as a US made SMG. If it was a registered DEWAT, the original factory ID as manufacturer does not change when reactivated, as that is the ID on the original registration. Prior to the end of the '68 Amnesty, there was no such status as a "reactivated" DEWAT, even though there probably were DEWATs that were made live again and then registered. "Registered DEWAT"applies to those deactivated MGs that were registered prior to or during the '68 Amnesty and retained their registered status thereafter and can be reactivated.

Neil's name and address in the mfg box means that he "re-manufactured" it and registered it under his name as the maker.

I have a similar issue with a WWII MP 40 that has either an importer or a manufacturer stamped on the receiver. The gun is definitely not a tube gun, but it does have markings on the receiver. This information is listed on the form.

The current owner stated that the previous owner says that is is rewat. If it was not registered by the Amnesty as Bob stated, it is remanufactured...

The discussion was an earlier thread in the MP 38/40 forum board.

What I have done, is have the seller request a FOIA for his MP40.

The original registration should settle any issues to what it is.

So, we wait and see...

That would be my recommendation in your case, since you own the gun...
