Recommended spare parts for MP40

Recommended Posts

Okay, want to see what other members think about spare parts to have on hand for an MP40. I have an extra complete bolt, and firing pin with buffer/spring assembly, but what other parts should I have as a minimum?

Was thinking it might be a good idea to have a spare ejector and sear on hand but should I have other parts too?

I know someone will post ---buy a complete parts kit--but I don't want to spend 2k or more for parts I most likely would never need.

Thanks everyone.

Mac.

Keep a close eye on the tightness of the cocking handle attachment to the bolt. If it loosens up and you can detect movement in it, then it is time get it repaired. Having repaired several dozen loose or detached handles, it is clearly a common problem. If the handle falls off while shooting and cannot be found, replacement sliding locks are extremely difficult to find now. Reprs were being made, but are no longeravailable. Hopefully the Latvian MP40 repro MP40 makers are also making safties. Haven’t seen one yet from them.

A couple extractr/springs, firing pins, and sears would be adequate for spares. Might get a shooter grade barrel, repro or genuine to replace the original barrel if your barrel is numbers matching. Squib rounds do happen and the barrels bulge easily.

+1 to the above advise. Had the cocking handle come loose on my bolt but caught it in time.

Also, spare recoil/buffer assemblies and component sections have been very useful. I've had them crack at the flared end of the individual sections. Wolff recoil springs run fine in mine with Winchester white box 9.

i always buy every spring, pins, 1 bolt, 2 extractors, 2 ejectors...i had that charging handle fly off mine after a couple hundred rounds...i welded the damn thing to my bolt now....it isnt coming off again...id recommend considering doing it also if yours is non-matching...or take a non-matching bolt and do it to it...

i bought most of my parts from Bergflak...probably $1200 worth....they are all NOS condition..

i found a nice spare barrel (they are hard to find)

if you can find a nice minty parts kit for $2,500 with a barrel it might be a smarter way to go....id look at the kit as an investment as it will never go down in value or be less rare.....problem is most parts kits are junk...i bought one, robbed it and resold it making it an even worse parts kit....be wary

i had a blish lock break in my thompson...a part many said is not normal to break...it sure was nice to go in my box of thompson parts and pull one out, toss it in my gun.....im big on having a full parts kit for almost all of my guns...the mp40 is the only one i dont

id say i have close to $2,000 in parts.....but yet not a full kit....far from.....but all my parts are flawless

I am still buying magazines. I have a bunch I keep loaded too for the range. I have seen 40 years of this industry come and go. What you see today, you might not see tomorrow. If you want or need it. Get it when you see it.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Huggy, I think a replacement barrel will be added to my list but will try to find a "deal" if I can.

good luck.....they are NOT easy to find....i bought 2 from Folke...$450 and $500....one was NOS/mint...the other is a rechambered dewat barrel...still perfectly functional, but reworked...rifling minty...

another forum member has searched for a nice one for i think close to a year now w/o finding one.....live mp40 barrels are not easy to find....i saw a few sell with the sights on them for $900 (i think) 6 months+ ago.....

i got the last 2 Folke had...sorry

my gun came with an after market, so 1 is on my gun and 1 is a spare....

might be worth buying a kit, taking the barrel and reselling the kit......just a thought..

Normal1959 now i know why i cant find any vintage mags for my gun?? Ha!! Actually i have about 15 of them but never use the vintage ones for shooting. I bought a dozen of the vig mags that are in like new condition. I did the grinding mod so they fit and Im very happy with the way they run in my Wilson 40.

Lol I have 88 at last count. Us older guys have seen things come and go. The time to get it, is when you see it. If they get a hi-cap mag ban in place you will have limited options in the future. I am guessing I have 1000 to 1500 assorted hi-cap mags for my guns in the house right now. I tell everybody to buy now. Things like ammo and mags will never be cheaper. I am so angry at the dems for this propaganda attack and I think it might work in their favor. You could see another weapons ban and hi-cap mag ban coming. I keep close to 100 magazines for each machine gun and luckily some guns use the same mags and spare parts.

The 2 purchases I regret (not buying) the most are used Garands by the pallet at $200 each and new Enfields by the pallet at $200 each. (in the wrapper) I once bought 200 SKS rifles at $100 each from Nationwide sports. I will say it again. Get it when you see it.

Eric...do you have any MP41 mags?? I have three and they fit so snug in my 40 i would never even try to use them. The reg 38/40 type mags fit fine even a little play. Are the 41 mags slightly different?? Oh and dont forget a pallet of Mac 11s for $175 ea Edited by Petroleum 1

I have an MP41 mag and runs great. No issues with mag well fit. I really believe some of the problems with our MP40 mags regarding fit and function are based on who made them ie slave labor.

Kind of cool to think they sabotaged mags so the weapons might jam!!

I purchased a wilson tube back in 2003 and believe mags were going for around 45 dollars and had about 11 of them but included them as a package when I sold the wilson. Guess how i feel about that now!

I only have 5 mags right now, so trying to build up my inventory. Would like to have at least 10 to 12 as a minimum.

Eric, I totally agree with you and your philosophy. Wish I had followed your advice and practices when I was younger.

Vinn, good idea about a new production barrel. Since I have a tube gun, really should not affect value and would have a new barrel.

Wondering if the new GSG MP40 9mm semi auto barrels would fit onto our MP40's? I know the mags don't which is disappointing.

My Wilson has a slab side magwell and the 41 mags are tight and i have a ribbed magwell from my parts kit and the 41 mags fit the same way. I have no use for them the way they are and cant sell them so maybe i just grind off the metal so they fit and use them for shooters. I bought all of my spare parts before my gun stamp came in.

NFA Amnesty...Indianapolis ordnance has new made MP40 barrels for $250. One of those would work fine. Vin
