UK Thompson Magazine Pouch Value?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if they are really "original" or a repro. Not that I'm the know-all expert but there are lots of fakes out there these days. Are there any markings anywhere?

Here's a link and discussion regarding that design. Interesting. And thanks for posting.

Got 4 sets, 8 of them total. Talked to the one who sells them now, he told me: The Norwegian Army got them from the UK right after wwII,

They were sold in a lot with meny other things from wwII, mostly English things. But some us I believe.

See pictures. will be selling 3 sets and keep one my self. (maybe i sell the lot to.)

What do you think? Ok stuff?

Intriguing pouches...I have not seen these before. Has anyone ever seen these in a WWII photograph?

Member Mk VII has never seen them. I'd also like to get the perspective of member rpbcps, and Canuck on these pouches.

Every once in a while, there's a new Thompson item that gets re-discovered after all these years. This could be one of them, but I'm not "jumping in" yet.

The "Lift the Dot" snaps look like reproduction components. The giveaway for me is the backplate of the LTD snap. Very flat, and not contoured like original LTD snap rears. The brass is also bright, and does not have the patina of 70 year old equipment. I will add photos to try to illustrate what I mean. It is hard to explain unless you have looked closely at original LTDs and repro ones. The pouches really look like they are made of modern parts.

I have eated my share of crow on this board before, but I am fairly confident these pouches are fantasy pieces. The fact they say "British Made" implies they are made for US troops to use like "British Made" web equipment, which demands a premium among collectors. Not only have I never seen this style of pouch before, I have never seen Brit Made pouches like these for US troops before. Hope this helps.

Original LTD fasteners on the Drum pouch. Notice the contours stamped into the backplate. Notice the Dull finish.

Repro fastener with flat back, and glossy finish like the ones on the pouches posted.

Those are not British Thompson magazine pouches. They already had the large Pouch, Basic, Pattern 1937, designed to hold two BREN magazines or two 50-round bandoliers of rifle ammunition (one of which was earmarked for refilling the BREN mags), plus a couple of grenades. They would accommodate Thompson magazines just fine, both the XX and XXX varieties. There was also a dedicated pouch for Thompson magazines made for the Home Guard to hold three XXX magazines as shown (pictures from the pinned topic Thompson Canvas Items).

I have seen a submachine gun magazine pouch with two pair of C-hooks like that to obviate designing "handed" pouches for the left and right. But the country of origin escapes me at the moment, and they didn't use LTD snaps like that. Those pouches are some kind of fantasy item in my opinion.

Dave,

Like you, I have never seen these pouches before. Considering the love affair the Brits had with the twenty round magazine and the fact they moved to the Sten I can't see these being much in demand. I won't jump in yet either.

Hi. I looked on Digitalmuseum.no the Norwegian museums on the web, it looks like the Norwegian military all departments/branches did not Keep one single Thompson Magazine Pouch. Irritating , Just like Sweden and the overstamped 1921/28 Thompsons and Finnish Soumi KP-31(got one of them). Give everything away and forget about it, irrational attitude. What about the people who collect it and shot subguns? Seems like the authorities don't care at all. (Its the problem with socialism, they believe the weapons them self are evil.) Only 29 hits on Magazine Pouches at all among 2.5 million objects in the museum collections in Norway? Sorry for the rambling, I get a little bit depressed by the attitudes here.

I've never seen any photos of pouches like that before and don't think they were made for the British forces, for the reason giving by Big All and Canuck.

However, the fact the belt fasteners are added in such a peculiar way, makes me think they are not a reproduction, but manufactured for a specific purpose, but I have no idea what that could be. There has to be an original item for you to make a reproduction of it, I always thought.

As MKVII says British-type webbing was made by, or for, some other European nations after the war, so I would like to see one of these in the flesh, before passing any judgement.

Stay safe

Richard

I have been studying them carefully now and have discovered some marking on the Magazine Pouches , a number in the middele pocket and some marking where the "cloth/webbing" should be attached/sawn together. And for the hooks on the back, there is a "V" upside down. (se pictures.) of the 8 i got 2 are marked 1,2 are marked 2. and 2 are marked 3. The last 2 are marked 7 and 8. one of the 3s is very weakly marked.

The Magazine Pouch I compare them with in the photos is one I know is original aircraft dropped from uk to Norway in 1940, only nickel-plated not blued buttons. You can se the same marking where the "cloth/webbing" should be attached/sawn together on this one to.
