A local resident posted this to me regarding the famous scene in The Godfather when Sonny gets a taste of a few Chicago typewriters. Her cousin built the prop tool booth. I live close and remember it was shot on the old Mitchell field runway ( now Nassau community college). They had to make it look like the Long Beach causeway which did have a tool booth in those days. They kept the camera angle narrow to avoid showing other buildings and such which would reveal it was definitely not the beachside road. Also, when you see the movie again or YouTube the scene, notice The Thompsons are not pointed directly at James Cann ( sonny). Im sure they were fitted with blank adapters and the actor had to be protected. Perhaps someone might have some info on the guns. jojeep Posted September 8, 2018 Report Share Posted September 8, 2018 (edited) Just a sidenote, when the Toll Taker drops the Sonny's change, he is operating the gunfire/ Bullets that went off hitting the car. Holes were predrilled and Squib wired in.The 1940 V-12 Lincoln Continental was picked because it looked like something Sonny would drive. In the Novel I think it's a Buick.That Lincoln, complete with Bullets Holes toured the Custom Car Show circuit in the late 1970's.I wonder where it is today. bob241 Posted September 8, 2018 Report Share Posted September 8, 2018 (edited) Several years ago one of the (3) Lincolns used in the tollbooth scene (the one with the real bullet holes) was owned by a car collector in the small town of Pittsboro, N.C. it may still be in his collection.
