You can't make this stuff up...

Recommended Posts

Doing an M1 gun build. Standard routine. Test fire, then disassemble and

blue, and reassemble and final test fire. My guy forgets to put the extractor on

the bolt. Gun fires, and we think all is ok except doesn't eject. Put extractor on

bolt. Test fire and now gun does not fire and cartridges almost chamber but not

fully.

Turns out the cartridge case from the first round blew back enough to clear

the chamber and must have hit the ejector and flipped around and the bolt shoved

it fully into the chamber with the bottom of the case first. So the following rounds

had the bullet shoved into the mouth of the empty case which was now acting as

a chamber.

Easy fix once we realized what happened, but who would have thought...

Strange but true stories. A couple of years back, I had a very similar issue in 9mm. Half the case separated after ignition leaving behind 1/2 the case in the chamber. Took a while to figure it out but eventually realized what the problem was and thought, "boy, that's one in a million" . . . . . until it happened again a couple of weeks later. Then it happened to a friend. In fact, it occurred often enough amongst my group of shooting friends that we began referring to it at the range as " a Ringer". What in the world could be going on???

Just for fun, I'll post some pics today to show you what the case looked like after separation. The bottom of the case was extracted (and often lost in the grass on the range) but the top half of the case was left behind in the chamber.

Anyone interested to venture a guess what was the cause of this mysterious range phenomenon? We eventually figured it out after applying the secret to almost any gun related issue, and that is attention to detail.

I'll post the solution in a few days if someone doesn't guess it first.

Have fun solving the mystery!

The right hand picture shows the problem. Rather than a smooth taper, the case has a step located at a very high stress point and that is exactly where the separation occurs. It's a known issue with certain brands. Let me guess either FM or Maxxtech crap ammo?

Yes, the stepped case was exactly the problem. We did encounter some FM headstamps since our range is located outside of Houston where Freedom Munitions had a retail store. The other headstamp we encountered was Ammoload.

Since I now know all ammo is not created equal, I do not run any remanufactured ammo through my sub guns.

I am wondering what factory ammo other board members prefer to use in their FA firearms? Both 9 and 45?

Here is a photo of an intact case which is what us reloaders need to diligently cull from our brass supply.

Thanks StrangeRanger for the link to the Uzitalk forum where this photo was obtained.

Blazer Brass, Speer Lawman, Federal Black Box, Sellier & Bellot all no issues

No problems with WW White Box but I've not run nearly enough of it to be certain

Heard nothing but good about Prvi Partizan but I've not tried it personally

Remington is often underpowered enough to cause failures to eject and EXTREMELY dirty. The bargain price just isn't worth the hassles.

Sellier & Bellot gives great results (both function & accuracy) in my M-16/CAR-9. Blazer aluminum works flawlessly except in very dirty guns. (For which I place the blame on me, not the product.) I use the aluminum version because I don't have the need nor the room for any more brass (yeah I know - blasphemy) and the kids get to recycle the aluminum.

Are you all running 115s in 9mm and 230 in 45?

Remington UMC bulk ammo is extremely underpowered

to the point that it can cause a runaway in some MGs

Remington green/white box seems to run okay in both of my '28s, but you can hear it running a bit slower than other ammo brands.....almost like a gun slows down as it gets dirty.

That ammo in 9mm is so underpowered it runs away every time in both my Sten MkII and my S&W 76.
