Pete
differences. The forged is the more preferable one, I believe, and the Springfield rifles are from the cast line. Shoot. I think I will wait to hear from the more knowledgeble(sp) members. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif
boeboe
Drop forged is best. Machined from billet is second best. Cast is third. Most rewelds would proably be fourth. Springfield Armory, Inc. M1A receivers are from casting, but they advertized their BM59's as "hand forged beauties". I believe they were built around either (1) Beretta machined forgings or (2) Springfield machined forgings, see my post on the Nigerian. Drop forged and billet have a grain direction, similar to a piece of wood, and as long as consideration is given to this grain when designing the part, a forged part will be stronger at any given heat treat level. It will resist heavier loads perpendicular to the direction of the grain. It will actually be weaker than a casting if forces are applied parallel to the grain. Like in cutting firewood, it is easiest to cut parallel to the grain and most resistant perpendicular to the grain.
