To shoot a M16 just has too much going for it to ignore with all the possible variations.

I'd have to go with the AK-47. It has some historical cache and it is definitely a shooter which will not let you down. It doesn't need constant maintenance and attention, the way the M-16/AR-15 does (least bit of sand, dirt, dust, etc. and there can be problems). Regards, Walter

P.S. Does anyone with some experience care to volunteer which make/ model, country of manufacture, and/or distributor to buy the best semi-auto AK's from, as I can only own this variant in New Yorkistan?

I own 2 M-16's, and I've never had any of the trouble that you mention. The only jams I've experienced occur if I don't clean them for over 1000 rounds. If I had to pick one, that would be it. If I had to pick one semi-auto, it would be an FAL. I love my WH M1, but I just don't shoot it as much as the M-16's. I usually put 5 or 6 mags through the M-16's for every 30-round mag through the Thompson, plus several others.

You can't beat the Thompson for history, though, and I'm definitely a historian...

Without a doubt the French made St. Etienne 8mm heavy machine gun. (you didnt say SMG) It has that certan 'je ne c'est quoi" that made the French military the envy of the world in both world wars, Indochina and beyond. It was known to the French GI's affectionately as the "Trench Feather Duster"

I choose a Colt M16A2. Set up for 7.62x39mm with G-tech or Scherer mags and an AK47 muzzle break, you get as much power as can readily be controlled on FA. And with 7.62x39mm, it hits hard even on semi-auto.

I would have to say the M-16 due to the different uppers combinations, but if the survey is only 1 receiver/upper/caliber than I will easily stick with my Thompson, but had to think hard about a belt fed .50 cal.
