MGS Markings on M6 Barrel & other questions

Recommended Posts

Picked up a parts kit for my M6 police model. Interestingly the barrel is smooth but fitted with a police vertical grip and front sight. Marked on the back of the barrel near the top of the receiver are the letters "M G S" Any idea the meaning? My m6 barrel is unmarked in this area. The number "1946" is also stamped on the lower. Possibly a serial number? Didn't think it could be a year since they didn't start manufacturing until 1948. I don't think it is the serial number from the gun as the bolt is marked 1019 which should be the serial number of the gun. Parts kit came from a PD but no other information. Also the barrels are apparently timed to each gun as the parts kit barrel turns about 1/8 more turn until it's tight. Backing it off allowed the retention screw to be inserted but left a hairline gap between the barrel and the receiver. Looks like it will work fine but I haven't fired it.

Maybe the 1946 is the serial number. The 1019 is the serial number of another gun. If the P.D. had more than one M6 they could have marked the bolts so when they cleaned the guns and they were apart, the bolts would not be mixed up. However, when they cut the guns up, they did not care if the parts matched. They just threw them in a box and sold them off.

This really is only a guess. I have no clue. Maybe the M G S are the entails of the Police Dept. whom owned the gun.

Try calling the P.D. and ask to speak to the P & E officer. They may know.

All the parts supposedly came from the same gun from the state of Michigan. That's the only info I have. I haven't seen another lower with a serial number on it so that may have been a control number added by the PD. Who knows. I strongly suspect that the guns serial number was 1019 based on the bolt engraving. There were some parts guns put together by Southern Ordnance Co that were marked with serial numbers on the lowers but also had their name on it. Curiously they had smooth barrels like the one in this kit.
