Advise on fitting a skeleton stock to Mk2

Recommended Posts

I have 2 skeleton stocks but only one snaps into place. The other will not slide completely into the receiver. In fact, it hardly gets started. Before I start hammering and filing, could someone with experience fitting these to specific guns offer some helpful tips?

I have attached pictures to help demonstrate the problem.

I think the tab on the stock which does not fit is too wide to slide into the slot in the receiver. But if you look at the first picture (the sideview of both stocks), the one that fits is slightly angled backwards at the top of the "O" and the tab at the bottom has a slightly large gap between the stock and the tab. Not sure what steps I should try first. Does anyone have a suggested workflow? Or other considerations I have not mentioned yet?

Thanks in advance.

Good thought Annihilator. I just measured the thickness of the "O" and both are approx 6.25 mm so I think we can eliminate that variable.

My front sight is also loose. It slides approx 2mm left and right. I don't really want to tack weld or stake it as it would ruin the existing finish on the gun. I guess I could cold blue a stake but wondering about other ideas? Red loctite??? Rocksett? Bubblegum? something else?

In the past I have had several problems with stocks fitting, in almost every case the top of the stock that slides in the receiver was slightly bent.

As far as the front sight, you could try removing the sight and spreading the base slightly or weld, brazing or silver solder... I tried JB Weld but it didn't hold up, silver solder may be the best option

Thanks for the tip on the silver solder Frank. Think I will give that a try. Obviously, you are one of the most experienced and well respected members here on the board and anything you suggest I know comes from the school of experience.

Wondering, did you find a way to bend the "O" at the top of the stock into a configuration that would fit easily into the receiver? Thought about heating and hammering? I had a "T" stock one time that I tried to cold hammer the "O" and ended up cracking the weld holding the "O" plate to the tube.

For the front sight take a small, cheap flat blade screw driver and put it between the two halves of one side and lightly hammer it in a bit to spread the two halves apart so that they flare out into the dovetail groove. Move the screwdriver over so that it is in the part of the sight that is not much in the dovetail and hit it a bit harder to flare the two halves wider than the dovetail. Repeat for the other side. This is how it was meant to be fixed in position. Of course this assumes that the sight is in the correct position for accurate shooting.

Glues of any kind will heat up from firing and fail. Silver soldering will mess things up including your finish and will be hard to remove if you ever need to take the mag housing off. With the screw driver you can just undo it with a few light taps from a flat punch.

My loop stock was hard to get on and off (had to use a rubber hammer and tap), so I used some emery cloth and lightly sanded the inside where it attaches and it slides on and off smoothly now. I assume the tolerances were tight. A MK V stock went on and off smoothly.
