thirtyround
Gents, Did the US military produce a parts layout mat (dont know the official term) for The M2 Carbine, along the lines of / similar to what is used for the M16 series of weapons? If by change anyone has one can you post a pic? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, JB
dalbert
I know there was one for the M1, and I think there was one for the M2. I'll consult my copies of Larry Ruth's War Baby series when I can to check on this. David Albertdalbert@sturmgewehr.com
DougStump
Yes, there was a mat for the M2 carbine, had a chance to buy one but I let it slip by. I don't think they had one for the M1 carbine.
HB of CJ
I bought my non USGI M1 Carbine bench top exploded parts mat at one of the big internet retailers. Forgot which one. About 15-20 bucks if memory serves.
thirtyround
Gent's Sent Dalbert an image via email of the mat I have, for some reason couldn't post here. I'm sure he'll post that image here soon. Thank you for your input, and invite more after the image is posted.

thirtyround
Dalbert, Thanks for posting the pic. I'm thinking if genuine, probably USMC. However unsure at the moment unless I can reference it.
dalbert
I found this item on page 668 of Larry Ruth's "War Baby II," and the image in the book is of the same item layout, but is a negative image of the item above. The areas that are white on yours are black on the item in the book. I have no doubt your item is original. The item shown on page 668 was apparently made for South Korean forces, and the caption indicates it is yellow paint on O.D. canvas. It looks a little odd in black and white. These are apparently marked "*TARS, Ft JAX S.C." just ahead of the barrel. Yours does not have this same marking, but it is the same otherwise. I believe this may be an otherwise undocumented version. I'm going to cross-post this in another forum, and see if maybe it appeared in the Carbine Club Newsletter at some point. There were M1 Carbine, and M2 Carbine disassembly mats. Larry Ruth has a cotton M1 Carbine disassembly mat shown on page 1381 of "War Baby III." Ruth documents 7 different M1/M2 disassembly mat versions. David Albertdalbert@sturmgewehr.com

thirtyround
Dalbert, Awesome info, Thank You Again. I got this one framed in oak and covered with glass. You can clearly see its of a cotton duck textured type fabric. Ink is black on the cotton duck fabric. I'm assuming the oak frame was custom made, just considering the possibility would be narrow the frame would fit the outer line as perfect as it does. Measurement was taken of the black perimeter line just inside the oak frame are: 26" High X 31 1/4 Long. I really don't know at this time how far the material measures beyond that line (which is under the frame) but wanted to provide it for future reference. Again all, again Thanks for the input, JB
dalbert
I received a reply in the Carbine Club forum, indicating that in Carbine Club Newsletter # 213 from 1 July 1994, that an M2 mat was reported with "63 Silk Screen Ft. Ord Calif." marked in the lower right hand corner. No picture." So, I think yours is a variation that has not been documented previously.
