Thompson/1 Lieut-Ord. Dept-U.S.A./Ordnance Officer", 1p, 8x11. Lakeland, Florida, 1898 May. Invoice of Ordnance and Ordnance Stores turned over by Thompson to the Assistant Quartermaster at Port Tampa, Florida, "in obedience to order of Maj Genl Shafter letter dated May 22 1898". Contents: "15,000 Rifle ball cartridges, cal. 45". The Spanish-American War had officially begun a month earlier when the United States declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898. Major General William R. Shafter led the U.S. Army ground invasion of Cuba in the Spanish-American War (see lot 274). John T. Thompson (1860-1940), inventor of firearms and airplane devices, invented the Thompson machine gun ("tommy gun") with Commander John N. Blish, U.S. Navy. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
