Pre 1921 Trench Broom

Recommended Posts

The Lewis LMG trench broom.

The following account appeared in the book " The Belgium Rattlesnake" page 142.

Originally appeared in a London newspaper in Nov. 1916.

#3281--Private Robert Ryder, Middlesex Regt.

" For most conspicuous bravery and initiative during an attack. His company was held up by heavy rifle fire and all his officers had become casualties. For want of leadership the attack was flagging.

Private Ryder, realizing the situation, without a moments thought for his own safety, dashed absolutely alone at the enemy trench, and by skillful manipulation of his Lewis Gun, succeeded in clearing the trench. This very gallant act not only made possible, but greatly inspired, the subsequent advance of his comrades, and turned possible failure into success."

Point #1-- Lewis guns were taken from US troops upon arriving in France and were given Chauchat machine rifles in their place.

Point #2--If Gen John Thompson had read this article he may have bought stock in the Lewis Gun Co instead of producing his version of a trench broom.
