Who designed the drum? Also, was the capacity determined by the capacity of ammunition boxes? (from Peters and Winchester) who at least (I think) packaged them 50 rounds to a box at the time. Or was there practical reasons like consistant feeding issues etc. Or?

Oscar Payne designed the first Thompson L Drum (from T. Hills book)

If practicality were an issue, Auto-Ord would never have developed the "C" drum. I guess practicality caught up with John T. in 1928 when he ceased advertsment, and posssibly even production, of these drums.
