Some times I just sit here and grin :-)

If you don't consider it rare would it rate as scarce? I guess I don't get the joke. I can't recall seeing one for sale ever although I think Merle does this mod.

When I see rare Thompson articles for sale;

Not mine, but I also have one of these rare drum modifications.

The internet is so entertaining!

The seller must be joking. It's an obvious Nazi Spreewerke marked pistol with the barrel cut down post war. Yet he won't sell it to a C&R holder even thougfh it's obviously older than 50 years. Some die hard fans of the 60's show "The Man from Uncle" cut down there p38 barrels to make it look like the guns that Robert Vaughn and David McCallum used on the show. This gun should be selling for less than standard price Not more.

I wonder if that ersatz P38K belonged to Mr. Waverly or even Napoleon Solo himself?

He may be wise on not shipping to a C&R. To qualify a firearm must be in it's "original configuration".

I just ran a query on GB and two more "Rare Thompson M1A1 Drums" are listed there.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=340602702

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=340606950

Now do a GB "Advanced Search" for "Completed Auctions" scanning for "thompson drum m1a1" and you'll see these drums are neither rare nor scarce. It looks like nobody wants them as all listed have no bids whatsoever.

Those of us with a M-1 / M-1A1 Thompson, envy those who own a 1928. Thus the "Rare M-1A1 Drum" has evolved. With the availability of cheap Chinese drums, now every backyard blacksmith gun smith with a bench grinder, dremel and a welder can make one. It was a fun project for my son and I to tackle. Definitely not worth the cost of having the "Drum Doctor" do it.

We all wanted to feel like a gangster, and dump 50 rounds out of a drum. Did it once with my homemade "Rare M-1A1 Drum".

Issues, the fully loaded drum really makes a weight and balance issue with a Thompson. I hated it, did not like the feel, so I sold it.

- 50 rounds makes you waste ammo, you just want to let her run.

- To me it is a negative toward accuracy.

Drums are an interesting part of Thompson collecting. On a 28 they belong, cause that's how they were designed. But the "Rare M-1A1 Drum" is just a fun novelty.

Just my thoughts.

Definitely a novelty, and I don't have any interest in having one for my M1.

However, I do feel that everything "Drumdoctor" Merle has done for me has been far more than worth the cost.

He's also one of the most helpful persons I've ever worked with.
