I own a 1928 Savage Thompson serial number "S 27300", which is a pre lend lease Thompson. stamped on the left side of the receiver, toward the rear, are the letters "A L" over the number "944". can any of you RKI tell what the A L and 944 represent ? thanks in advance

I believe that those are inventory markings used by the Indian (India) regional military authorities. Many guns imported in the 70's and 80's had these marks. I have seen over a dozen and own a few.
Last summer, at the TCA event, Britsh museum curator, Peter Laidler, gave me this info.
