I want to get one of those 1927 semi-auto Thompsons and see that some of the receivers are aluminum. Anyone have any experience/opinions with longevity of these as opposed to the steel ones?

Read the many posts on this site - the chance is that the aluminum will not work any better than the steel receiver.
I would pass on the aluminum, Don't expect the steel or aluminum gun to work out of the box without sending it off and spending money to get the gun to function.
My experence with Kahr thompsons are that they are junk out of the box. But if you have the money and time they can be made into a shooter.
Kahr should not be allowed to even call their guns Thompsons...
