Looks more like a scabbard for a Winchester 94 carbine with room for lunch or a 6-pack on the bottom!

No horse alive would sit still for long if you tried to cut loose with a Thompson while sitting on its back...or even close by. |
Not true!
I was at a WW1 re-enactment many years ago, and a guy had an Australian "Lighthorsemen" uniform, complete with horse and repro saddlery. He said his horse was totally gun-trained, and a smart-alek "German" haded him his MP-18 and offered him a twenty if he could empty the clip over the horse's head without falling off.
He did. The horse barely flinched. We were impressed.

And yes, the "German" paid up!

Lots of horses are "gun-trained" now that "Cowboy Action" has become a big deal.. also there are Horse ear-plugs available to help with the problem of gun-spooked horses....I think I could fire off of my horse's back .. but not right over his head.. He's been in a lot of battles and the gunfire doesn't bother him but next to his head probably would.
