Just received a 28 complete buttstock assembly from IMA and unscrewed the slide to find #8909 stamped on the underside if the slide. Did these numbers match the original gun or was the number just a random manufacturer stamp? The stock did not have the crossbolt drilled and when I opened the trap in the end a nice oiler fell out. Without the crossbolt does it make it a 21/early28? Thanks for any help, just curious.

Motorcar,

The early Savage 1928 butt stocks were not numbered to match the gun. The numbers were placed on the parts so they could be refitted to the butt stock after bluing. The parts were handfitted to the wooden stocks. If you take the butt plate off you should find the same #8909 number stamped on the butt plate and stock, unless the butt stock was rebuilt at some point.

Colt butt stocks were also numbered, but the slide attachment is not numbered on the Colt guns. You have an early 1928 model butt stock, consistent with early British contract guns.

This is off topic.

But the new slides that are available from TommyGunner.com
can be engraved with the serial number of your gun.

Even though it was not the actual process on the early arms, it does add a nice touch.
