Buy "Sahara" (Not the new one that's BS ). It shows the ring sling quite clearly. And it's several member's favorite Thompson movie....

My Model of 1928 Savage (1941 production) had one of those rings on the barrel when I got it.
The one I have does not have the part that the sling goes through, just a threaded hole on the thick part of the ring.
It is crescent-shaped and uses spring tension to hold it to the barrel (It just "snaps" over the barrel.). There is no driilling or set screws connecting the ring and barrel.
I don't know if this was a factory or aftermarket item, but it is very well made - not a homebrew gadget. It was a PD gun so I don't know when it was put on but it was sometime between 1941 and 1986, when I got the gun.

My WH came with a swivel clamped on the barrel. It is a split ring type with a screw on the bottom holding the 2 parts together and providing mount for the swivel. I think I have it around here some where?

It's been a few years since I had my forward one on, so I don't have the details in front of me. Based on a suggestion from a fellow 21 owner at that time, I went to Academy sports and got a split-ring front swivel for a 30-30 for about $13, and found it to work fine. But I didn't particularly like carrying the gun around with a sling, nor the effect it had on the "lines" of my 21.
