Hi Guys Little bit about myself, I’m 65 and from the Rhondda South Wales, my interests have been with WW1 and for collecting British items, the only weapon I have is a deactivated SMLE dated 1917. Years ago I was given a Lewis Gun Butt, which I placed on a shelf with my other WW1 items in my den, a couple of days ago I decided to have a closer look at it, it was that black, you could not see any of the wood grain, the sling swivel was rusted that bad it would not move, I started cleaning the wood with polish and a duster, layers of dirt came off and I could now see the grain, a chunk of it must been damaged and someone had fitted a new piece of wood into the butt, there was a metal washer and a woodscrew where the brass disc should be. I tried to loosen the sling swivel whilst still attached to the butt with no luck, in the end I had to take it off, I wired brushed it, boiled it sprayed WD-40 on it heated it up, it worked, I even found a War Department Arrow on it, this is were I could do with your help. The plug with the two holes in, I’ve tried to free and it won’t budge, I’ve sprayed WD-40 on it and tapped it with no luck I can’t use any heat as it would burn the wood, there other end a woodscrew fell out, leaving a hole in what I can only say looks like a thick washer, that is wedged in, which I also can’t budge, would you know of a tool to take out the plug end with the holes, this would help in tapping out the other end, I would also like to know what went in there and can you still buy genuine/repro part. Or do you think I should just clean it up as best I can and leave it, the odds on me ever having a complete one are a million to one, Regards. Gerwyn
