	This is a question for the Thompson parts hoarders.  I've had this grip mount bar for many years and, with a 1963 production date, assume it was made as a spare part to support Thompsons given to friendly governments as military aid.  It's machined in one piece but the machining is very rough and the finish appears to be a quick dip in thin black paint.  Just curious if this is a common variation or an oddball.<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/uploads/monthly_2026_03/49226332_ThompsonGripMount1.jpg.7721313de387eabb7644bd5f5c028ea0.jpg" data-fileid="45578" data-fileext="jpg" rel=""><img class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="45578" data-ratio="32.10" width="1000" alt="171752429_ThompsonGripMount1.thumb.jpg.d8369f74f4f6339fca1e168cd97a5cfd.jpg" data-src="https://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/uploads/monthly_2026_03/171752429_ThompsonGripMount1.thumb.jpg.d8369f74f4f6339fca1e168cd97a5cfd.jpg" src="https://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></a><a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/uploads/monthly_2026_03/157106240_ThompsonGripMount2.jpg.697a776168113b330ef94b2d3485e854.jpg" data-fileid="45579" data-fileext="jpg" rel=""><img class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="45579" data-ratio="54.10" width="1000" alt="1379736161_ThompsonGripMount2.thumb.jpg.7e9a285353f61d7ca27e54bb235c811d.jpg" data-src="https://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/uploads/monthly_2026_03/1379736161_ThompsonGripMount2.thumb.jpg.7e9a285353f61d7ca27e54bb235c811d.jpg" src="https://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></a><a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/uploads/monthly_2026_03/434723427_ThompsonGripMount3.jpg.ae9a43388c51fb2b9d1058d8f4967e82.jpg" data-fileid="45580" data-fileext="jpg" rel=""><img class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="45580" data-ratio="21.30" width="1000" alt="365561505_ThompsonGripMount3.thumb.jpg.5062c361ebdb1325845163cb551649ce.jpg" data-src="https://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/uploads/monthly_2026_03/365561505_ThompsonGripMount3.thumb.jpg.5062c361ebdb1325845163cb551649ce.jpg" src="https://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></a>

	While browsing Gunbroker for Thompson stuff, I found this listing for a M1928 stock (sans hardware). Has a 4 digit serial on the end (4027), and a fairly conspicuous Remington anchor stamp on the front; no contractor marking in the slot for the buttstock latch. Not being super familiar with Colt era parts, does anything look off to the folks here? Was the anchor found on any wartime buttstocks? Don't have my copy of American Thunder at hand to check...

	Another war time kit build. The lower was on the max end of specs. I've seen it with a lot of the thompson upper/lowers fitting tightly or loose once assembled.
</p>

<p>
	I refit this lower to the receiver so that solved the issue but you can see whoever was issued the gun fought it and beat up the lower with a metal hammer/tool to disassemble. This bent the magwell rail to the point magazines wouldn't slide into the frame.
</p>

<p>
	Measuring a few NOS condition frames show the magwell slot is .195-.200 tall. This one was visibly bent inward and measured ~.182
</p>

<p>
	Our fix was to machine a mandrel, heat the magwell rails with torch and drive mandrel into magwell. The fix was a success and I thought other thompson enthusiasts would find this helpful/interesting!

</p>

<p>
	Don't envy a man and his medals, all those ribbons on his chest,<br>
	He did not try to get them, they're not there at his request,<br>
	They were earned in stinking hell holes, where no man would like to go,<br>
	Or in cold and wintry places, where there's only ice and snow.
</p>

<p>
	He did not know he earned them, till they were awarded at parade,<br>
	They were bright when he first got them, but in time the colours fade,<br>
	He was told he had to wear them, and to wear them all with pride,<br>
	But when the memories come to haunt him, those same medals make him hide.
</p>

<p>
	Cause those medals will not bring back, all those guys he left behind,<br>
	And he would trade them all forever, for a little peace of mind.<br>
	So don't envy a man his medals, you don't want to take his place,<br>
	Thinking back to long gone battles, and meeting dead friends face to face.
</p>

<p>
	There is discipline in a Soldier, can see it when he walks,<br>
	There is honour in a Soldier, you hear it when he talks,<br>
	There is courage in a Soldier you can see it in his eyes,<br>
	There is loyalty in a Soldier that he will not compromise.
</p>

<p>
	There is something in a Soldier that makes him stand apart,<br>
	There is strength in a Soldier that beats from his heart,<br>
	A Soldier isn't a title, any man can be hired to do,<br>
	A Soldier is the soul of that man, buried deep inside of you.
</p>

<p>
	A Soldier's job isn't finished, after an 8 hour day or a 40 hour week,<br>
	A Soldier is always a Soldier even while he sleeps.<br>
	A Soldier serves his country first, and his life is left behind,<br>
	A Soldier has to sacrifice, what comes first in a civilian's mind.
</p>

<p>
	If you are civilian, I am saying this to you,<br>
	Next time you see a Soldier remember what they do,<br>
	A Soldier is the one that is brave, protecting you and me,<br>
	And If you know A Soldier, I am saying this to you.
</p>

<p>
	Lest we forget

I have one that shows age, but little/no use and that has "the look" (to my admittedly untrained eye) and even the smell reminiscent of the old-school Army Surplus stores of the 60's.
</p>

<p>
	Just curious if the stamping on the alternate side is a red-flag
</p>

<p>
	Thoughts...?

	Thanks,

	The recent thread about WH M1 frames and the fact that I own sort of an early one (M187A…early 1986) got me thinking…
</p>

<p>
	Going to the Wayback Machine and Gary James’ management of the old TCA newsletter, Vol. 94 Aug. 15, 1998 of the TCN provides some data from Frank Iannamico (if I mis-attribute, forgive me) about the West Hurley M1 submachine guns.
</p>

<p>
	Serial numbers for the WH M1s run from M100A to M717A. M100A through M174A were produced in 1985 (versus almost 3200 semi-auto M1s between 1985 and 1997.) Clearly the M1 wasn’t high on anyone’s “Want List” until the run-up to 922(o). Furthermore, it appears there weren’t any semi-auto M1s produced by WH before 1985 (313 guns, with s/n range of M100 to M402.). My math doesn’t add up here in that it seems there are more 1985 semi-auto guns than serial numbers.
</p>

<p>
	Likewise, regarding the full-auto guns’ complete serial number run of M100A to M717A relative to the stated total production of 609 guns indicates more serial numbers than guns.
</p>

<p>
	So what happened? I know things were crazy in the ten to twelve months leading up to May 19/922(o) but how are these discrepancies explained? Regarding the full-auto M1s, were eight serial numbers skipped? Eight guns not papered in time? Mis-serial numbered into the semi-auto range?
</p>

<p>
	And back to the original inspiration to all this… Since no full-auto M1s were produced until (presumably) the latter part of 1985 it would stand to reason that <i>all</i> WH M1 submachine guns would have used modified semi-auto. There wouldn’t be much reason to begin milling full-auto frames/make more sense to use what’s on hand due to time constraints. So, did any WH M1 submachine guns leave West Hurley with surplus/full-auto frames?
</p>

<p>
	(Or, embarrassingly, is this information in <i>American Thunder</i> or Tom’s <i>Colt’s, West Hurley’s […] </i>book and I’ve overlooked it?
</p>

<p>
	TIA

	I passed up a copy of the British Edition of the July 2, 1944 issue of "YANK" magazine at the Show-of-Shows in Louisville, KY last month. When I went back to buy it, it had been sold. After looking for almost 3 weeks, I was able to buy a group of "YANK" magazines that included two copies of that issue. My hunt also turned up a copy of the June 23, 1944 issue.
</p>

<p>
	Both of these feature great photos of M1A1 TSMGs on the cover. The one of the Paratrooper climbing aboard his plane - presumably for the drop into Normandy - is evidently highly sought-after by those interested in US Airborne, D-Day, <em>and</em> TSMGs.
</p>

<p>
	Maybe my enthusiasm is heightened by the fact that I am still over the moon happy with picking up my M1A1 last month, but I thought the magazine covers were worth sharing here on the Forum...

	My apologies. I tried to post these images in a PM to Tom, but can only add links there (which also failed to load.) These aren’t my photos - I harvested them from online: one from Apex and one from 1919A4.com.
</p>

<p>
	The conversation stemmed from me mentioning my WH M1 lower had a groove down the center. I later swapped it for a USGI M1 lower from an acquaintance’s dummy gun.
