I recently purchased a Lanchester mag off GB at a too good to be true price. It was exactly that. It had a crease running lengthwise down one side which was invisible in the photos but deep enough to jam the magazine up if I loaded much more than 25 rounds.

I tried driving a piece of 18mm round bar up inside the mag from the bottom keeping it in contact with the internal follower guide ridge. It lessened but did not remove the crease. I have a small pry bar that measures 23/32" (.719" or 18.25mm ) across the flats of the hex. I drove it in again keeping one point of the hex in contact with the guide ridge. It gave a much wider area of contact that reached farther into the magazine space than did the round bar and again it lessened but did not completely eliminate the dent. However it moved the dented side out far enough that the now much smaller dent no longer intruded on the cartridge space in the magazine.

I had a dented Sten mag which also benefited from the same treatment. If you have Sten/Lanchester mags with dents in the sides of the tube, this might be worth trying. It might or might also work with the dimensionally similar MP18/28 mags but I cannot say for certain.

As always YMMV so proceed with caution

Discovered this today while cleaning my Sterling (DLO/Andrewski). I disassembled the bolt and recoil mechanism and decided to pull the extractor and clean that area. After removing the extractor retaining pin, I pulled off the extractor and then using a pair of needle nose pliers, pulled the extractor plunger and plunger spring out of the bolt. Pretty straight forward.

Then, after cleaning the recoil spring assembly (parts) I noted that in the rear inside of the bolt is a spring loaded nipple, which until today I thought was used to secure the charging handle under spring tension. Using a pair of needle nose pliers (same one as with the extractor plunger) I pulled it out and much to my surprise, it is EXACTLY the same assembly as the extractor plunger and plunger spring. So each Sterling bolt has within it, a spare extractor spring and plunger. Nice!

The recoil spring exerts sufficient tension on the charging handle to keep it in place, so it's clear to me that this is a spare part!

Always a surprise with these older guns.

	STEN KITS
At this point I'm looking for some street value of kits.
Digging thru old boxes in my basement I ran across some 'saw cut' STEN MK III kits I bought ten to 15 years ago, which I had completely forgotten about. Some are original as they were when brought into the country. However, I have a number of them which, when I got them, I descrapped with a die grinder, thinking to save future buyers that trouble.
I have about a dozen STEN MK III 80% laser cut receiver tubes.
I also have several KRINKOV AKs with 10" barrels which imported as NEW from the factory were also saw cut demilled. I built one into a pistol with the several receivers listed on the 4473 as pistols. Again, I'm looking for street value of these kits.
Additionally, I have several IZZY 1919 kits, including 100% Ohio Rapid Fire RSPs to go with them.
I have a couple of M2HB kits, again with 80% ORF RSPs. Machining of internals was done by TomT at KMP.
At this point I'm wondering the street value of them.
I have a small batch of new recoil springs made up for the Sterling SMG, and these work great. Restore your unit to new running condition. This is the main rear recoil spring, not the front buffer type spring, about 5-10% power over stock. Also works well with 147gr ammo, according to feed back from buyers. Price is $13, $10 each additional spring, $9 shipping.

I bought a Stemple Mk2 last fall, and today is the first day that I've been able to take it to the range. I have 5 magazines, all of which appear to be in good condition. The gun failed to fire more than one or two rounds before jamming with a fail to feed.

I don't think that the fail-to-feed problem is caused by the magazines, as it occurred with all 5 magazines. I'm wondering if the ammo (PMC Bronze 115 grain FMJ) could be the problem, or if the gun needs a total rework/tuneup.

I have a Sten MKII. My nephew bought it back from Korea about 1954. He registered it during the 1968 amnesty. He sold it to me about 1984. I have put thousands of rounds thru it with no problems. A few years ago, I bought a parts kit. I shot the gun yesterday and I noticed my recoil spring had gotten compressed, so I decided to put in a new recoil spring. The old spring seems to be fastened into the housing. It looks like there are some tabs in the housing holding it in. There is nothing visible from the out side of the housing. I fooled around with it, but was unable to get the spring out. I have an extra housing out of the parts kit that has no sign of this. So I put it and the new spring in the gun. But I would like to get the old spring out, if possible. If any one has any knowledge of this and how to get the spring out, I would be very grateful.

Also one thing I noticed it on the magazines the followers are sitting lower then the good ones is there anyone who has that tool to fix them

I’m new so please forgive me if I screw this up. I have one of these Sterlings and am having trouble figuring out the trigger group. In order for it to work properly the sear has to be pushed against the spring tension towards the trigger. I don’t see how this is done. It’s hard to describe but I am including some photos. On pics 3 and 4 note the sear placement with it pushed forward and tilted with the punch.

Well, this auction may be the answer:

Transferable STEN MKII, lacking details in the write up!

Looks like years ago someone went to considerable effort to turn a STEN body tube onto its side and create the above gun.
Front sight mount is now on the left side, ejects straight up, cocking handle is to the left side of the centerline.
I am sure someone loved this, but not my "cup of tea"..
Hello I have just recently acquired a Sten MK2 Tube gun and ever since I got it I have always shot high and right of my point of aim and am wondering why. First off I have two barrels one that came with it and a threaded pike arms barrel and they both do the same thing so what I did was purchase a site lite sl-500 green laser bore sighter to see if the sights are off. What I noticed is this I point the gun 25 feet away and the laser is showing high and right but what is strange is that when I take the hand guard barrel sleeve off the laser is perfectly aligned with the sights perfectly center so I’m wondering why the gun is only high and right after I put the hand guard on ?

This is not the usual "why" question. Instead I ask "when". Was there an evolution and at some point in time a change in materials was made (analogous the different rear sights on the Thompson). If so, when did the switch happen? Or were both being made at the same time by different companies and the soldier just got what he got?

I came across this photo of some British Auxillary Units, a WWII 'stay behind the lines after the Germans invade the UK' type organization. It shows three of the soldiers with what are clearly Mark III Stens but with some kind of wooden stock that I have never seen in any other photographs. Has anyone here seen anything like this?

So, I've been doing a bit of research (which can be dangerous) and as many of you already know, the original finish on the Lanchesters was a gorgeous, dark (almost black) color. It reminds me of some of the top-end Browning shotguns I've seen.

My question was whether or not, over time, the guns were arsenal refinished and if so, what type of finish was applied.

Googling deep, I ran across a 2005 post from a Brit (civilian) who worked at a facility that refurbished Lanchesters for the government. He noted that the guns they received were stripped and re-finished with phosphate (parkerized). He also noted that the guns, in his opinion were very nicely manufactured, of excellent quality and way over-engineered.

His post was in my opinion credible.

He also noted that after the guns were declared obsolete in 1979, most were destroyed. Guns declared "export" include a separate six pronged star, and if then sold, a "S" stamp next to the star. (separate from the "star" by MK1*). Obviously most of the 79K or so guns were manufactured by Sterling "SA". Since the gun was mostly used by the RN, after WW2 when the UK sold surplus ships, they did so with all accrutuments to include any onboard Lanchesters.

So, for those of us lucky enough to own a C&R, we may have the original or arsenal refinished versions, domestic UK or export, sold export or not sold export, MK1 (or MK1 converted) or MK1*, bolt block or not.

Great gun (how could it not be since the design was "borrowed" from the MP28), great history and a welcome addition to any collection.

Just took my M.P.18,I to the range and thought a few hints and experiences with the gun may be of value to others.

My M.P.18,I is a very late mfg gun (SN 35,217) with 21 matching serial numbers. The gun was factory modified to a side stick version (20 round single stack proprietary magazines) in 1932 and does not carry the 1920 police date stamp on the receiver.

Spare parts are impossible to find, to include extractors, bolts, recoil springs and especially magazines. A few observations during my ownership:

The OEM bolts use proprietary firing pins that slot in from the rear, with the recoil spring sliding inside the firing pin and over a recoil spring guide rod in the rear of the receiver. This design is terrible as the spring is prone to kinking. The bolts are SN matched to each gun, with a SN matched extractor, firing pin and charging handle.

The OEM bolts are machined to accept ONLY Hugo Schmeisser 20 round single stack units.

The extractors are sorta interchangeable with MP28 and MP38u40 parts. Some minor modification may be necessary.

I was able to convince Jason at IO to reverse engineer the OEM bolt and modify it slightly to accept OEM 20 round stick magazines AND modified Sten magazines. The modification to the bolt included slightly widening the feed lips to accommodate both the OEM magazines (slightly narrower) and Sten magazines. The Sten magazines had to be modified to a 2mm narrower sleve in order to fit into the M.P.18,I magazine well. The modified bolt appears identical to the OEM bolt and uses OEM firing pins and recoil springs. Of course, this bolt is still subject to the OEM smaller diameter recoil spring kinking.

The M.P.18,I operates flawlessly and best IF you use a fully interchangeable Lanchester bolt, firing pin and recoil spring. The dimensions of the bolt match perfectly and the recoil spring is a large diameter type that does not kink or bind. All three parts fit into the M.P.18,I perfectly and make the gun shoot great. The Lanchester bolt also accommodates both the OEM stick magazines and the Sten magazines.

The OEM 20 round stick magazines are super hard to find and are very well constructed with stainless steel followers. All magazines were SN matched to guns, although this was clearly done outside of the factory as the magazines I have sport multiple SNs.

I have also installed a small thickness rubber "O" gasket around the recoil spring guide rear to prevent any unintentional stress on the wood stock when firing.

I was able to locate a stash of OEM magazines and firing pins if anyone needs a back-up. I have one extra firing pin and five or six of the original stick magazines. The FP will run $200 and the magazines are $500 each.
