  1. Chuck, I am fairly certain you have what is often referred to as the third generation "Colt" or "New York" drum but is actually the first gen of the drums made by WPS for A-O. The comments above about the front and back faceplate markings are in line with the examples I own and have seen. As noted above, the "problem" is what appears to be a blued rotor, which is not correct for a first gen WPS (there are actually four different versions of the WPS drums pre-war). All first gen WPS drums I have seen have a silvered rotor while the second thru fourth have blued rotors and different faceplate markings. So, what does that make your drum? It is a WPS first gen with the possible exception of the rotor. It is hard to say from the pics, but it appears to me the the drum may have been refinished. The cover and body finish appears different from the ones I have and appears too uniform, and it looks like the finish may have covered up a couple spots of minor surface rust. If it has been refinished, and that is a big IF, it could account for the rotor finish issue. The only pic of the rotor looks to me as though it has an irregular finish unlike other "blued" rotors I have seen. Perhaps the original silver rotor finish was altered during a refinish process. Of course, the other suggestions above about a replaced rotor are also a reasonable explanation, especially if it has not been refinished (your call on that one). If you wish to contact me directly to follow up, please feel free to do so. Roger
