  1. Thank you for the intel Bridgeport28A1! Can you confirm that the S marked one is in fact Savage and WW2 produced as well?
  2. I want to replace the magazine catch on my 1979 Westy with a USGI magazine catch. I ordered one but was unhappy with the condition so the vendor sent out a replacement in much better condition. The original one has a B stamped on the shaft, and the replacement one in nicer condition is marked with a S. I assume S means it was manufactured by Savage, but not sure what manufacturer the B denotes - possibly Colt (Bridegport)? I tired to find this info online, but was unable to find any intel on this. Hoping some of the intelligentsia around these parts might know.
  3. Finally getting around to posting an update on the status of my 'In Progress’ West Hurley 1927A1. After much research around these parts I ended up sending it to Dan ‘Deerslayer’ Block last year to perform his California compliance modification and to ‘gussy it up’ with several of the upgrades I gleaned from plowing through these threads – thanks for all the great ideas fellas. It took a good amount of time and not an insignificant amount of $$ to come up with all the parts before I was ready to send it off to him - finding a serviceable surplus 1928 trigger frame was the most difficult and I ended up having to roll the dice and purchase one off of GB from a vendor over in Poland... In addition to the Cali-compliant mod Dan performed the following upgrades: - Modify the FA 1928 trigger frame to run my 1927A1 Semi-auto parts - add dummy (non-op) selector. - Modify the rifle to accept stick mags. - Surplus 20-rd Stick mag blocked off to only 10-rd capacity. - Install EZ-Pull springs. - Replace stock barrel with 14.125" barrel from Green Mountain Barrels, radius the fins. - Replace the ersatz Cutts compensator and Lyman rear sight with the real McCoys (he pinned and welded the Cutts compensator onto the barrel to meet minimum OAL). - Replace 3/4" grip mount with 1/2" grip mount. - Checker the selector and safety. - Bead blast and re-blue the entire rifle. - Dan Block custom 1928 pattern stock set with +1.5" horizontal foreend (to help mitigate the long proboscis look of the non-SBR barrel). - Dan Block custom spare vertical foregrip (couldn't decide between horizontal or vertical grips so got one of each FTW...) . I think it tuned out awesome and I am thrilled with the results. Though not nearly as cool as going the SBR route (someday after the Wife and i escape), but about as good as it gets for Thompson's here in CA. I cannot recommend Dan's work highly enough! See below link to the video of Dan demonstrating his California modification on my West Hurley!
  4. Unfortunately SBR is not an option for those of us here behind enemy lines in the PRK, so going with a 14.125" barrel and a welded on Cutts comp is about as good as it gets... I take solace knowing that my Thompson will be SBRd some day after I finally cut bait and bug out of the land of fruits and nuts!
  5. Hey Diddler, Welcome to the Thompson Semi-Auto Discussion Forum, glad to see you found your way here from Calguns. Over there I'm Top Shotta HiFi - the member who suggested you ask your Tommy questions here. Many experts on all things Tommy hang around these parts. As far as acquiring a Thompson - you might want to check with Dan 'Deerslayer' Block. The last itme I talked to him he had some SA Thompsons for sale that he said he could gussy up with whatever modifications you may want. I just recently received my West Hurley 1927A1 Thompson back from Dan who performed a number of upgrades: - Stick Mag Mod - modified the rifle to accept USGI stick mags - California Modification - modified the rifle so the mag is permanently attached to the gun until the action is broken. - Replace the too long "proboscis" looking stock barrel with a 14.125" barrel from Green Mountain Barrel - pinned on real Cutts Compensator for an overall length of just over 16" . - EZ-Pull Springs - Dan Block custom stock set with his +1.5" horizontal foregrip. (a little trick to help offset the appearance of 'proboscis' looking non-SBR barrels). Best of luck in your endeavors.
  6. That Tommy is looking well nice, fit, trim and proper! I just recently had some similar work done on my Tommy by Deerslayer. I'll post up pics and a report on my original post soon. Best of luck with your endeavor with CalDOJ!
  7. Yes the bullet button will have to stay on after registration - it will carry the designation 'bullet buttoned assault rifle'. The bureau of bureaucracy is slow, color me surprised lol! Hopefully it goes smoothly for you! .
  8. Nice grouping and love the old timey sepia effect - just need a BAR to complete the look!
  9. ....and we were just considering the reasons not to register... Gavin's not even trying to hide what he has in mind for Califo er I mean America. Face it there is a storm a brewing and "Why don't you just leave California" is no longer even a viable option.... California is coming for America! 'why not just register it?' Lol...
  10. What confuses me is Bridgeport21 says, and he is correct. No hesitation registering your legal machine, send in the $200 dollars and get your tax stamp. If California said $15 to the state and $200 to the IRS for a tax stamp and you can have a short barrel Thompson, people would be lining up to do it. What I am wondering is once the rifle has been registered as a aw, can you take the bullet buttons off? Register it = have to keep the crappy bullet button on it and earns the shameful designation 'Bullet Buttoned Assault Weapon'. I think there really is no better solution than what Dan is offering for those here in Cali who are not strictly bench rest shooters!
  11. I went featureless for awhile and hated it - hence why I'm having Dan do this modification on my Tommy. Personally I think the Thompson platform is too heavy to run featureless - it is awkward and cumberson to shoot off-hand without the having the stabilizing effect of your thumb wrapped around the pistol grip. Bench rest shooting in featureless configuration is not as bad, but shooting form the bench gets old for me quickly... Like the FAL rifle platform, the Thompson is too heavy for that featureless mess! - JM2C, YMMV.
