Held on by a rivet that's welded to the outer wall of the spring cannister.

As far as I can tell, nothing at all. Now, if the pin had a flange on the spring end, the spring coils would hold it captive. Without it, well, you can see the problem above. So I peened the pin over lightly, to prevent it from passing through, and welded the body back together.

So, we were rattling off some rounds the other day, and my buddy was loading mags, and he asked me to help him with the drum mag, which... Wasn't taking tension. Now, this was a $169 GunBroker special, so I feared the worst, that the spring had snapped. So tonight, I cracked it open, ready to rivet the spring back together when this greets me on opening the drum up. I guess this one was made on a Friday? At least the spring isn't broken!

I'll tell you, as a new guy to this, it makes me feel CONSIDERABLY better about my choices! lmao

And the hammer price is $13,500! Which after house premium, sales tax, and transfer fees, comes to... $17,412.50! A fool and their money!

Yeah, if you were to bid right now and win, you'd be paying $12,112.50 after premium and taxes. So, that said, you'd be in it another few grand in new parts to clean it up and make it reliable/ presentable. Unless you want to rock the look

I'm sure it'll still go for $12,000, before the 22% house premium, and the 5.5% sales tax.

Noted! I'm a big fan of using unique under my powdercoated cast bullets. On the subject of OPs question, I have seen one Thompson receiver "crack". It was a mediocre reweld that spontaneously disassembled itself like a... Slinky, the sections held together by a spiraled thread of flux core weld lines. Not exactly a common failure mode, hah!

So, a quick follow up on the three legged dog for those interested. Despite all appearances, it runs exceptionally well! It runs ball, hollow point, steel, aluminum, brass... Suffering only a few misfeeds from a bad mag out of several hundred rounds we fed it today. The four and a half month wait felt longer than it was. I thought I had misread the topic title... Evidently I did not.

Quite a good write up, though if I may offer a different way to skin a cat... I would be of a mind to use two small bolts to locate and fix the sight in place, and rivet the other two. Think along the lines of how aircraft Clecos are used. Trying to get them all in one go requires skill, and custom tooling, which for a one off... Also, a hydraulic press is a great tool for setting rivets in such an easily accessed spot.
