Thompson 30 Rd Mag With Welded Vent Holes?
ron_brock replied to scotty's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
These were welded or soldered shut to help keep dust and dirt out. I am sure others on the site will have more info. I believe the Brits did this on 20 rounders to help keep sand out during the North African campaign from what I remember. I imagine some thought it would help on this 30 rounder as well. - Ron -
Roger Cox/law Enf Ord Mag Repair Tool For Sale
ron_brock replied to reconbob's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
No not for unusable mags per se' but perhaps collectible or special mags that need a little TLC. I would love to have that tool myself but I've bid against bt3 before on ebaY, it ain't purty... I was actually thinking of a way to do this today on the way home from work. I just picked up two patent date mags that need minor bumps taken out of them. Who knows, there may be some interest. Is the tool simply a form plug or does it expand as the screw is tightened. I looked at it briefly last night, but I wan't in an engineering frame of mind . - Ron -
"saving Private Ryan Pouch"
ron_brock replied to ron_brock's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
Thanks again to all. Not sure I agree with the flinging it out into cyberspace statement, as I was merely looking for some of the wealth of knowlege on this site, but regardless at least I know more about the pouch and can further research it on my own. -
"saving Private Ryan Pouch"
ron_brock replied to ron_brock's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
Thanks guys. So they do fit Thompson mags, but were also issued to fit other items/other uses. So a 3 mag XXX of 5 mag XX pouch are really mor correct when it comes to pouches issued for the Thompson stick mags. Thanks again, - Ron -
I was hoping to get some information on the "Saving Private Ryan" magazine pouch that is pictured in AT II. Was this pouch only for the Thompson or did it have other uses (M3 etc). What are these pouches worth (or going for recently), say compared to an original 5 mag XX pouch or L drum pouch. I hope this question has not be asked in the past (I searched through some of the old posts and only found reference to the pouch). Thanks, - Ron

Colt #641 For Sale Or Trade
ron_brock replied to Hawkeye_Joe's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
:agree: if it were 641 in 98%, pick out a 1919, and I would trade him...I'd even throw in 250 rounds of '06 to get him started - Ron -
Wtb: Original Colt Barrel And Compensator
ron_brock replied to munks069's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
There is one currently listed on GunBroker. I have no ties to it, just noticed it last night, however I am not keen enough on Colt parts to know if it's a deal or not. Seems high, but I have no base line. - Ron -

Thompson Interest
ron_brock replied to fortyfivecal's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
I've had decent luck with Sportsman's Guide. I got my finned 28A1 kit when they first got them in and it was only about $550, however the price quickly went up. The dummy receiver... don't waste your money. I didn't realize there were better ones out there at the time. When I called to complain about the size hole in the receiver where I thought I could thread in the barrel, I was told "that's why it says only to be assembled by a gunsmith." I was going to make an insert and thread it, however I figured I would wait and get a good display receiver once I decide what I want to do. Just my 2 pennies. - Ron -
Dummy, Prop, Display Thompsons
ron_brock replied to levallois's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
Thanks for the info and the quick lesson on DEWATs! - Ron -
Thanks David. I had seen the rifleslings page, but was never quite sure if the long 1917 style would mount correctly, or if you had to have the short version. I guess I need to get one and play with to to visualize it, I'm a hands on kind a guy, pictures usually don't work! Thanks, - Ron

Can someone give me a hand in determining the differernces in Kerr slings and which ones would be most proper for a 28A1? I am confused on the different lengths and can't make heads or tails from AT II compared to what I read online. Thanks, - Ron

Dummy, Prop, Display Thompsons
ron_brock replied to levallois's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
Bob, By that I assume you're stating that due to the influx of parts, they simply don't have the same value they did before all the kits came in? Not just that the value of a dummy made from original parts is going down in value (but that dummys are more easily accessible these days?) Scott PS, There is (or recently was) a Thompson dummy on gunbroker that was stated welded from old receiver pieces, but the bolt was welded into the receiver. I wondered the same questions about this. I'm sure it doesn't perfectly jive with the ATF definition (still uses actual receiver), but it definitely couldn't turn into a machine gun either. As Bob says, a gray area. I too saw the welded original receiver display gun on GB. The first thing I have learned as there is no such thing as assuming or clear to beaurocrats. In listening to some of the answers that Mr Schaible provided to some of the"generic" questions during the TATA show proved that there is no such thing as cut and dry and at times it's up the courts/jury to decide means or intent. Although I know in my mind that the welded display could most likely never be turned into a functioning MG, it still includes all original parts including the receiver that has been "rewelded" after it was torch cut to destroy it. I would be nervous of this type of setup. For my own knowlege, is a DEWAT required to be registered or only once it was REWATTed, if done so during the amnesty? Is a DEWAT that was not converted under the amnesty still required to be registered or is it considered a non-gun? Thanks, - Ron -
28 Commercial No Serial # On Lower Receiver
ron_brock replied to MarkN's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
Just a skip across Oakland County, Oxford. Nice to know there were some more from Mich there and hope to meet more of you in the next year. I did not know anyone going into the show and was able to meet a few while there. If you want to put a face with the name I am behind my wife Kelly (who's in the Wayne State University) shirt in the latest news letter group picture Anyway, I had known for a few years that Thompsons were on the C&R list, but it took reading about NFA arms to realize what all the terms meant, Pre May, Post May, etc and why the huge gap in prices. I really got the bug late last year when I went to a shoot Sheridan Armaments was hosting and actually got to shoot machine guns for the first time (M1A1, Ma Duece, M16, Mini Uzi, 1919, AK, and a Glock sample gun). After that I bought the Frank's Machine gun buyers guide, American Thunder II, Tracie's book and Doug Richardson's books Joined TATA and went to the shoot. (like I said, I am hooked and Kelly enjoyed it also, she can't wait until next year). However I am not yet sure how much a Thompson will cost me. It's not the price of the gun, it's the unknown price that will cause the wife to agree! - Ron -
28 Commercial No Serial # On Lower Receiver
ron_brock replied to MarkN's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
Thanks Ron. Glad to have found the site. I officially have the "itch" and am in the process of saving the funds to pick up a 28A1 . I originally was planning to pick up a Kahr semi auto, but once I learned more about Thompsons, owning Class III arms, Michigan becoming a transferrable state, and went to the TATA show and shoot, I decided to add the cash to the savings for the real deal. It's been a busy year, and I am trying to learn as much as possible about Thompsons and NFA arms so as to go into the future purchase as educated as possible. So now I am keeping my eyes open to understand the market and what to look for so I don't make a mistake on my purchase. Also adding accessories as I find them so once I get the gun, I should be all set. Thanks to all for a great informational site! - Ron -

28 Commercial No Serial # On Lower Receiver
ron_brock replied to MarkN's topic in Thompson Submachine Gun Message Board
FWIW, This gun was listed about a month ago for $10k (by a differnt gentleman in Mi), sold immediately, before I could check it out. At that time it was listed as a shooter, that was refinished, and a great buy for the money....Now I see it's a new seller and listed in great blued condition, commercial greade at 19k OBO. If one was interested in this gun, I would check it out before forking over the cash. - Ron -

As first time attendees of the event this year, we have to agree a great time was had by all. TSMG28, Kelly is grinning again, http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif now that she made mentions on the forum. She can't wait until next year. Thanks to all who were at the shoot for their hopitality and great times and of course the Hill's for hosting this great event. - Ron
