  1. Thank you for your reply BRMCII! Just make one work to reinforce the grips and keep from pulling through or are there originals out there? If you have one handy can you measure the ID, OD and OAL please? If you have a lead on one that would be great too. If not Ace hardware has spacers. I guess I could custom one a few thousands thinner than my grip frame for the reinforcement. https://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/125/3379 I did have a bakelite equipped lower a long time ago and remember one of the panels had the bolt head recess pulled through where a spacer would have prevented. I have a wood 44 now that I want to swap the grips to bakelite but want to make it right and not ruin scarce original parts. TC
  2. Hi all! Looking for some help as I don't have a bakelite equipped 44 handy. Is the hardware interchangeable between wooden and bakelite grips? The screw and nut are the same? There are no spacers in between the grips like a MP38/40? Any metal washers, ferrules, etc that go with the grips? Is it as simple as left panel, right panel, nut and machine screw? No pressed in metal pieces (threaded and bugle head countersunk) like the MP38/40? Thanks for the help! TC
  3. Here was the auction: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/809307010 The lower had a nice finish wear/originality with matching numbers that was a plus. Looked like an unmessed with hook charging handle bolt too. I have to dig out my slabsided mags! They are pretty! TC
  4. To my eyes: The one on the left looks stamped and the one on the right looks engraved. TC Colt #133 uneven stamped JHB.JPG Colt Navy #5862 GI Jive JHB different J.jpg
  5. Do you have a link? I think I watched the auction and deleted once it got too high. TC
  6. Heat is OK to remove barrels from demilled stubs as close to last resort but not on a firing TSMG especially NFA. You'll loose the heat treat in the grip mount too which will cause it to be much more flexible and have to be replaced unless using with a horizontal grip with reinforcement strap.. Is this a transferable receiver, sample, semi, display? What type of setup are you using to clamp the barrel? What are you using on the receiver? Original finish, parkerized, other? Have you soaked the barrel threads with any chemicals? Where about are you located? TC
  7. dam6, I've thought about the same thing! I have a patent date mag that has been modified for semi which would be a great candidate. I've used it for display but think a laser welder could add material in the least damaging fashion and then I could dress it down. The trick may be to select the right filler to accept blue touch up as well as be hard enough to stand up to wear. Google laser or micro welders in your area or small enough to ship. There are some youtube videos showing the process. Very little heat issues and precise! Let us know if you try it out on some USGI mags for trial run. TC
  8. Good reference here: http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=15057&page=2 TC
  9. It's way to early for an April fools joke right? This isn't even close! https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Original-Thompson-SMG-Canvas-Spare-Parts-Kit-Very-Rare/232969915037 TC
  10. Excellent! Beautiful condition! Did you remove the barrel and have the grip mount replaced? TC
  11. Very nice that you were able to connect with the owner and also righteous that you would offer to send to them! What size is this/these posters? TC
  12. The photobucket thing is a bummer but might be good info here. http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14185 I used to try and save Arthur's photos as he always had nice comparisons and examples for reference. TC
  13. David, How is the German SMG book? Any interesting data or photos not found elsewhere? Is the MP-38 examined in detail or just a bridge from MP-34 to MP-40? The TV series with Joe Montagna did an episode on the MP-38/40 and I don't think they ever showed an actual MP-38. When he discussed the MP-38 they did cut aways to an MP-40! Thank you for your feedback! TC
  14. Petroleum 1, Beautiful bolt you have there! I have seen the bolts listed on GB and I get a very uneasy feeling about them. They are both marked identically with the W37 and the dirty bird which just don't look right to me. The 7's are different in straight back vs curved. I understand stamps changed during the production runs with my example photo being the later slotted style and the GB ones being earlier non-slotted. I would like to hear feedback from other members and yours as to what you think. Other examples I've seen had a letter stamped and just looked different where the inspector markings are. http://i64.tinypic.com/atp18l.jpg http://i64.tinypic.com/23tquzq.jpg http://i68.tinypic.com/v2tsnm.jpg TC
  15. Hello all! I'm in need of an original MP-44 or STG-44 bolt. Later style with the diagonal cut. Prefer complete with extractor, extractor spring, extractor pin and firing pin but open to all options including stripped. I appreciate any help finding one. TC
  16. Do you have an item number or link? I have a couple early mags and would be interested in what drove this price. TC
  17. Dan, Any interesting history on the gun? Something you built? Matching, parts gun, etc? TC
  18. That lower, or one identical, was part of a kit sold on gunbroker about 9 months ago. I remember looking at it and thinking it was part of a cut away. If I remember correctly the front nose section and barrel were cut away at the chamber. My .02 is that the lower was a one off modification by an individual. TC
  19. Can you produce a few with no markings or with 1st pattern Colt? TC
  20. Even worse! I thought these were copyrighted by Neal Trickle to control this. https://www.ebay.com/itm/John-Dillinger-death-mask-July-23-1934-3rd-generation/302525795654?hash=item466ff14d46:g:EqEAAOSwZjJU9RAU TC
  21. Greystone45, What is your general location, city/state? Maybe there is a member located within reasonable distance with the tools or a known Thompsonsmith. The correct tools make the job much easier and safer with reduces the chance of unwanted damage. As mentioned above, if the barrel was hand tight and the front sight at the correct 12 o'clock position then it will need to be tightened properly and the sight re-pinned in the right spot. TC
  22. Has anyone ever seen a print or spec noted by Winchester or Ordnance Dept for the rear sling swivel placement on the M97 on original factory stocks or rebuilding program? I'm looking specifically for WWII takedown version variations. I was looking at photos of weapons with receivers marked with US or US and flaming bomb and there appeared to be variations when comparing different weapons even with the stocks having the inspector and crossed cannons cartouches. All appeared to have the correct Winchester swivel. I understand these could be non-original with markings applied or other modified 97 rear stocks but it got me thinking if there is documentation as to where they were originally inletted. If no documentation can any of you with believed original M97 take down WWII serial range trench guns measure from the heel of the stock, wood portion only not including the buttplate, to the beginning of the inletting for the sling swivel? I would believe Winchester would have had a standard placement but maybe we can get a consensus! Thanks for your input! TC
  23. Sorry for the necro post bump but does anyone have these photos saved? The ones from Bob's original post. TC
  24. Andrew, The shiny portion is the end of the screw holding on the small spring for the trap door. Thank you for the photos! What you describe with the other two rivets is what holds the blocks on each side of the trap door hinge pin pivot points. The one in question appears to be cast as one piece. TC
  25. I saw this posted on another forum but the recess to open the trapdoor and proximity to the screw/countersink doesn't look like one I have ever seen before. Is this a current manufactured part? looks like it might be cast? Interesting to see some of the variations of USGI as well. TC Item in advert: Surplus: M1 & M1A but used to reference recess and proximity to top screw: http://www.stg44.eu/galeria/218.jpg http://www.e-sarcoinc.com/images/products/detail/TMP0581.jpg
