  1. Will the M1A1 buttplates fit on the milsurp 28 buttstocks you see all over the internet? I am doing some refinishing customizing etc on a semi auto and I have a military surplus M1A1 stock on it already but am thinking of putting one of the 28 buttstocks on if I can just swap out the buttplate and hardware.
  2. This is sad news. A little irritating that I found it here instead of on one of the national news websites but that's to be expected I guess. I have the DVD set of Band Of Brothers and the Shifty Powers interview. I never forget how humble he was talking about fighting the Germans saying "They were doing what they were supposed to do and I was TRYING to do what I was supposed to do" He was so humble he couldn't even give himself credit for doing what he was supposed to do but "tried" He was just a sweet old guy. Very sad and I'm sorry to hear this.
  3. Thanks Dan, Been gone all day. I'll send you an email in a few Thanks
  4. I am completely refinishing and tuning up a tired 27-A3 .22 caliber thompson and want to replace the aluminum grip mount with a sreel one off a 27-A1. There was a guy on here a while back who said he did this with no problems and I would like the steel grip mount before the gun gets final finishing. Can't find one at GPC or anywhere else. If you have one to sell I can paypal immediately. Please let me know if you have one for sale. Thanks.
  5. Yes, I do plan on duracoating the whole gun, If it wotks half as good on aluminum as it does on streel it should do the job nicely. I just want to get the color right. Thanks.
  6. That's a coincidence, My Grandfather was in the 6th Engineers Special Brigades 555th QM railhead company the 6th ESB took quite a beating in the first 15 minutes of D-Day losing most of it's officers. I believe they suffered 67 casualties in the first 15 minutes on Omaha beach, I have some unit history regarding them as well as my grandfathers uniforms which fit like they were made for me.
  7. Does anyone know what color parkerizing was used on military Thompsons? I have seen several which had the grey type parkerizing and two with dull black parkerizing and one with the greenish parkerizing over the years. I understand the green is actually black that has changed color due to being stored in grease. Which color would be correct for a military Thompson? I suspect the grey colored ones were re-parked as they looked a little too nice. I have a 27-A3 that is getting a serious overhaul and I am planning to duracoat it after it is finished since it is aluminum and I can match about any color with Duracoat. I'd like to do it in a military patkerized finish.
  8. I'm not sure what to build yet. I dug out my jackhammer bits and there is one that is just a section about 18 inches long. I might see if I can drill it maybe with a half inch bore and cut a 10 or 12 inch section out and make a percussion pistol. Maybe even an underhammer. I have to find my book and see how the old guy used that jackhammer bit he used for the rifle. It is six sided so doesn't lend itself weel to flintlock UNLESS you used it with one beveled point on top instead of a flat and just used that as your sight plane! IDK. I got a few ideas LOL!
  9. Doesn`t make any difference what the gun is made of in regards to the hold open slot wearing out the bolts are all made of steel. IMO the steel needs to be hardened where the pawl catches it and the bolt and hammer springs are so stiff that nothing could hold up to the beating they give the slot. From reading some of your other posts you obviously have some metal working experience. What if you took your oxy actylene torch and heated that that section of the bolt up, Quenched it and polished it off and reheated gently until it turned straw or light blue in color? That's how I heat treat springs, Straw colored for softer springs and light blue for harder. Not the whole bolt but just that area.
  10. Man! I gotta stay away from this thread! I should be working around here and I'm pulling out jackhammer drills and drill bits and looking for steel rod to mig onto a drill bit! I could maybe do a 26 - 30 inch long section and use an electric fuel pump I have to pump some cutting oil down the small hole in that Swedish jackhammer bit. I actually HAVE barrels that I could build something with but the urge to see if I can do it is becoming too much. When you made the longer bit did you dremel a notch in the drill bit and a tongue on the steel rod or vice versa before welding to give it a little more strenth? I don't like the idea of snapping the bit off halway down the barrel.
  11. Yes that is the entrance woud. The exit wound was about as big as my fist and had some rib bones sticking out of it. The round ball that shoots is about 600 grains and I use 75 grains of 3F which is pretty much a hot 45-70. It does flatten out and do a lot of damage if you aren't careful about shot placement though. I destroyed both shoulders on one deer with that load because I hit him too far foreward. I wish I had the ability to bore steel like you do. I have a nice shop and can do blacksmithing and some machine work but no lathe. I read a book about a guy named Sylvan Hart who bored out Swedish Jackhammer bits and made 6 sided rifle barrels out of them. I gathered up a few of those bits from some old mine sites in my area but I dont have a way to bore them and I'm not as talented as that guy was to do it by hand.
  12. That's a neat gun. Interesting lock! Is that seamless tubing used on the barrel? I have heard of that being used. I'm building a percussion hawken because a friend bought the parts and became discouraged and sold them to me at a good price. I don't usually shoot percussion though. This is also a 75 caliber (Brown Bess) It's kind of my all around foraging gun, It shoots birdshot for small game and ball for big game. A Christmas gift from my wife. Also a Pedersoli. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-1/939783/snapshot2tp.jpg
  13. I think it just looks that way in the pictures. It has the 74 style hammer with the long snout. Cool i think that style looks better. Have ya shot any long range with it? Nothing over 200 yards, The area I live in is so heavily forested that I can't find a range longer than 200 yards and I have to drive about 40 miles to get to that. I do a lot of 100 yard shooting though. I got inspired today because of this topic and broke out my 50 Tennessee Flintlock and boy am I RUSTY! I have been shooting pretty much cartridge for the last year and I was lousy with the flinter today. The first shot was a dead center bullsye, The next 4 shots were all over the place ! I should really set aside one weekend a month at least to keep in practice with the flinter. I have a 50 yard range in my back yard so it's not like I really have an excuse for not shooting. I have just been too involved in benching cartdridge guns and am out of practice for offhand flint shooting.

  15. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-1/939783/sharps44.jpg OK, I got it to work that time (Whew!) I took a pic about an hour ago. Pedersoli doesn't make that particular model anymore. I carry it around on my horses and my neighbor gets all weird because it's getting dinged up a little and he can't see doing that to a $1600 gun but I don't believe in safe queens. It was intended to be used so I use it. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-1/939783/sharps22.jpg
