Ran across this today while looking for other things. The most detailed explanation of the adoption of the Cutts Compensator, and the testing of the CUTTs compensator on BARs and other machineguns of the day. Very long, but a great read!! https://muse.jhu.edu/article/796400/summary I could not post the download as it is too big. I can email to someone with better computer skills. Enjoy Sandman1957

Can anyone help me to identify why my Thompson M1A1 is fitted with a Cutts Compensator? I was always taught that the Cutts Compensator was never fitted to the M1 or M1A1, however I now find that I may have been put wrong. And just a Little more info for you if it at all helps: THOMPSON M1A1 .45 SUBMACHINE GUN WITH CUTTS COMPENSATOR, FULLY FUNCTIONING, DATED 1943. Serial number #439206. Barrel marked “P”. Left side of receiver stamped “Thompson Submachine Gun, Caliber 45 M1A1”. “GHD” crossed cannons ordnance mark. Also “BNP” stamped indicating its possible use by the British military. Right side of receiver stamped “Auto Ordnance Corporation, Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA”. “AOC” stamped on the bottom of the receiver where the front grip mount is fitted. “US PROPERTY” stamped on the receiver just behind the rear sight. Left side of receiver also stamped with the ‘Star of David’ Israeli acceptance markings indicating use by the IDF. Complete with a 30 round magazine marked “The Seymour Products Company, Seymour, Conn.”

Hi group. I am new to Colt Thompson's though I have covetted a Thompson since I went to my eighth grade Washington D.C. trip and saw an FBI agent demonstrate one; unfortunately, being from NJ, i never thought I could own one and always were told they were very expensive. Having moved to Virginia in 2002 (I wish i knew they were only 5k back then), I didn't pursue it. Anyway, I have a savage barrel, (had a 2nd gen cutts compensator on it) marked "S" and wanted to make sure that the barrel that I am comparing it to is a Colt barrel. The "colt" barrel has a mark to line up on the top receiver and has not other markings; i didn't know if my "colt" barrel has rounded enough edges or if the fins were the correct thickness (i read these got smaller as the serial numbers go up?). Were the "lines" only on Colt barrels and receivers? Thanks and correct me if I have made any mistakes.
