Silenced Thompson, A Test And Video!

Did a little test of the Thompson with the M.I.M.S. suppressor (or silencer ). Lined up a handful of guns. My boys crossman pellet gun (shot with all 10 pumps), my mac 11 with a .22 conversion kit and a silencer of my manufacture, 9 mm sterling (unsilenced), 9mm UZI M.I.M.S supressor (wolf ammo, non subsonic loads), and my semi auto thompson with the .45 supressor (my handload).

 

Once I shot them all side by side, the thompson was quieter than I thought when I last shot it all by itself. Certainly quieter than the 9mm, but the .45 acp ammo being subsonic probably had a lot to do with that noise level as you can really hear the crack after that shot with the 9mm.

 

Video camera was about 30 yards away from the shooting at nearly a right angle to the line of fire. Basically I just wanted to hear how this would sound, so the video is not really zoomed in on the action as it wasn't necessary to the test, rather zoomed out to try and show the distance the camera was from the action. You all know how loud a pellet gun is, and you can hear the birds in the background so sound reception by the camera is pretty good.

 

In my personal opinion, with the understanding that a standard .22 rifle is loud enough to actually cause some hearing loss, I would consider the silenced .22 quite safe to shoot without hearing protection, the 9mm UZI is likely above "safe" level for no protection for you ears, and the .45 is still probably just a touch above the safe zone.

Post script...was shooting the silenced thompson last night. Wife and kids were about 100 yards away, down by the river and didn't hear a thing. She asked if I was going to shoot the gun at one point in the evening, and I said "already did".

Which is probably the entire point. The guns are supressed, rather than silenced, the whole idea being to reduce the audible signature, and to make it difficult to identify the nature and direction of gun fire.
