wwl
I will probably get hammered on because of this question. There are two possible reasons for asking---(1) I have too much time on my hands, or (2) My scotch last nite was to large. If I were to take a M1 carbine recever and stamp over the M1 with a 2(why I have no idea) would I be making a Machinegun? Why is that any different than the army taking a M1 receiver with no internal parts, restamping the M1 as M2, and the bare receiver is now a machine gun. As I presume happened during WWII when many M1s were modified. If someone did overstamp a receiver, how would any one know if it was done in 2010 or 1944? The ATF considers any carbine stamped M2 a machine gun even if it has nothing but semi auto parts. Yes M1 carbines were modified to M2 during and after WW2 , both by the US Army and class 2 manufacturers prior to 1986. If such carbines were re-stamped and registered before 5/86 they would be transferable. After 5/86 they are contraband. If the carbine is not registered on a ATF form 1 or 3 or 4 or 5 then it is contraband, whether it was stamped in 1944 or today. Jim C
