No3 Mk1 Loop Buttstock

Recommended Posts

I purchased one of these last week after looking for a long while. I wanted one that hadn't been modified by the Finns.

The markings indicate that it was manufactured by J. Legge & Co., whom Peter Laidler describes as being still in business as lockmakers.

I'm curious about a hole that's near the toe of the stock. There's only one, so I don't see how it could be a sling modification.

Has anyone seen this before? Could it be a locating hole made to position the strip of steel in the bending press?

I thought it was for dranage: there's a similar hole in the bottom of the metal dust cover.

I'm not sure why there would be a drainage hole in the stock...

Looks to me like a locating hole for a bending fixture. My loop stock has the same feature...

Could it be for the little clip that holds the cleaning rod in the stock? I would expect there would be another hole if it was.

I don't have a loop stock with the clips to examine in person, but it looks like those cleaning rod clips are spot-welded to the bottom edge of the stock.

(I borrowed this photo from GB.)

The hole in my stock is on the butt side, near the toe.

The hole is not for the clips that hold in the cleaning rod, as they are spot welded on. It's a drainage hole, which makes sense in a tropical climate, or any other place where it rains. If water were to accumulate there, the stock would easily begin to rust, and it's the most likely place for water to accumulate on the entire weapon, based on the design of that specific stock.
